Francisco Romo Alejandro was born February 27, 1934, in Sabinal, Texas to Librado Alejandro (Father) and Manuela Romo (Mother). From an early age Francisco (Kiko) showed his character of being a disciplined and responsible son and brother as he did his best to honor his parents and provide for his brothers and sisters. Francisco was also blessed to have numerous half-brothers and half-sisters, although he, and they, treated each other as full-blooded siblings – always laughing and joking and sharing stories. As a teenager he would play baseball for a team called los Tigres (Tigers). His love of baseball would continue throughout his life, always enjoying the World Series, and cheering for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. And in football, he loved his Dallas Cowboys – but would also cheer for Houston. In Francisco’s early years, he and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas – literally moving their house from Sabinal to San Antonio. While in San Antonio he held jobs as a delivery truck driver for a drug company, and as a carpenter – utilizing his craftmanship and mathematical skills.
By the age of 21, Francisco sought a greater adventure. He decided to serve his country in the U.S. Marines Corps from 1955 – 1956, and soon after being honorably discharged he decided to enlist into the U.S. Army in late 1956. He would soon meet the love of his life, Englantina, while attending a dance with his best friend, Rudy. Francisco and Englantina dated for over a year – in which he proposed twice only to be turned down by Englantina. Nevertheless, Francisco stayed in touch with Englantina by writing her letters and sending her photos while he was stationed in Alaska with the Army. It was 1959 when he proposed for a third time and, his “yellow rose,” said yes – tying the knot on November 15, 1959, with a wedding in San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio. They would soon start a family with their first-born in 1960 and two more each year after. Their growing family is what led Francisco to re-enlist into full active duty with the U.S. Army to help provide for his growing family. From 1962 – 1980, Francisco served his country with the U.S. Army and was stationed in many areas around the world – including Korea, El Paso, Washington state, Florida, the Vietnam War from 1967-1968, two stints in Germany – once with his wife and children and another alone, and back home in Fort Sam Houston.
While serving, Francisco received numerous honors and commendations, including the Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, RVN Action Honor Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, numerous Good Conduct Medals, and the Army Commendation Medal.
After 18 years from the birth of his third child, Francisco decided to retire from the U.S. Army in 1980. However, he and his wife were surprised to learn that a fourth child was on the way and was born just weeks before his retirement from the Army. But there was no re-enlisting to the Army this time for Francisco; instead, he returned to his carpentry skills to continue to provide for his family as he built and fixed home and business projects for family, friends, and neighbors. He also took advantage of the G.I. Bill and went to college. In addition to this, he invested in real estate and took a greater interest in finance. His perseverance created a strong foundation for his family to stand tall and continue his legacy.
Francisco led a good life, always helping family, friends, and neighbors. He could always be counted on to keep his promises, either by contract or by his word. He is survived by his wife, Englantina Alejandro, his “yellow rose” of Texas, who was always by his side for 66 years; his daughter, Leticia, his sons, Victor, Mario, and Michael; brother Librado; sister Janie Garcia (husband Alex); and numerous nieces and nephews; and cousins. Francisco will be laid to rest in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Please continue his legacy of helping one another and donating to charity. Organizations near and dear to Francisco are the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
