As a young boy, he spent much of his time with his grandparents, L. C. and Grace Wiggins and his pony Rex at the North Creek Ranch in Comfort, Texas where he learned to love God, Country and the Land. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and went to the University of Texas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Two years later he joined the United States Marines Corps (USMC) serving his country as an Instructor in Escape, Evasion and Survival (1957-1959). He then returned to the University of Texas to graduate with a BBA degree. He worked in San Antonio in the insurance and feed businesses until he moved to Houston in 1970 where he began building houses. He loved cooking and reading, especially history, and was always ready for a party.
Many will remember him for his incredible repertoire of stories, "Fiction and Facts from Lee's Almanac", hunting weekends with Beau and the Brown Water Boys, and extraordinary times with friends and family in Comfort at the ranch. Though Lee would live in Houston until his death, he always hoped to return to San Antonio, keeping up his memberships with The Order of the Alamo, The San Antonio German Club and The San Antonio Country Club. This year Lee celebrated 37 years of marriage to Jean Merritt Johnston, his soul mate and best friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Chesley Wiggins Johnston, his sister-in-law, Kathryn Wood Johnston, his step-mother, Elva Johnston, his aunt Martha Wiggins Bailey and her husband Travis, his cousins Travis Bailey, Jr., John Bailey and Roy L. Brown, Jr. and his wife Carmelita.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, his son Fred Lee Johnston, IV and wife Mandy and their children, Louise and Martha Johnston, and his daughter Roxanna Johnston; nieces Kathryn Johnston Dehlinger and husband Bill and Anne Wood Johnston; cousins Marty Bailey Groos and husband Ricky and other family members. The family would like to thank Maria Luisa Zapata, Javier Mendez, Patience, Evelyn, and New Century Hospice for their gracious help and care.
A memorial service will be held in Houston in the Chapel at St John The Divine, 2450 River Oaks Blvd, 77019 on Monday, November 30th at 11:00 am with The Reverend Doug Richnow officiating.
A graveside service will be held in San Antonio at Mission Burial Park South, 1700 SE Military Dr on Tuesday, December 1st at 11:00 am.
