Col. Fred Mallet Walker Jr., US Army Ret age 87, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008. Col. Walker was born and raised in Northern Michigan.
He graduated from Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan with a degree in Engineering and received his Masters in Engineering from Stanford University. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Italy in World War II.
He also served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from active duty in 1970 after 30 years of service. For many years after his retirement he would return to the UP of Michigan to spend his summers fly fishing. Late in his retirement he was an active volunteer with St. Paul Episcopal Church and devoted much time to their food distribution program for 9 years. He was also a member of the choir.
Col. Walker is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Cynthia Wade of Phoenix, Mary Hotchkiss and Krisanne Frost both of San Antonio; sons, Fred Walker III and wife, Maggie Walker of San Antonio and Bryan J. Norwood and wife, Jan of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
