Fred Wiedenfeld, age 93, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on January 11, 1929 in Comfort, Texas, to parents, Edwin and Thekla Haufler Wiedenfeld. Growing up on his familys ranch near Waring, Texas Fred learned the value of hard work and family. He attended school in Waring and Comfort. He left school to join the Marines on his seventeenth birthday in 1946. He served on an aircraft carrier and visited many ports of the world. He was honorably discharged November of 1947. After a few months living and working in Chicago, he returned to Texas to take a job with Toledo Scale Company in San Antonio. He married Elizabeth Kohler, on November 6, 1949 and they made their home in San Antonio, where they welcomed their two children, Walter Fred in February of 1951 and Mary Elizabeth in April of 1952.
After Elizabeth (Betsy) passed away in 1984, Fred married Merle Jones the following year. They recently celebrated their 36th anniversary. She sometimes teased him that between her and Betsy, he was married his whole life.
Fred worked with scales his entire career, first as a service man, then in sales. He received several awards as top salesman of the year. After Toledo Scales Company closed their distributorship in San Antonio, he continued his scale sales and service with A-1 Scale and Elevator Company until he and a partner bought the scales part of the company. Then at age sixty-five instead of retiring as expected, he bought out his partner and continued the business until he sold it in 1999 at age seventy to his employee and dear friend Bubba Buchhorn.
Fred loved sports and games of competition. In his earlier years he participated in boat racing, and he and his family actually skied in water skiing shows. He enjoyed playing poker and casino blackjack, especially blackjack tournaments after he won the first one he entered. But the great passion of his life was hunting and fishing, which lead to many exciting travels and safaris. He was a member of Safari Club International and a lifetime member of Texas Trophy Hunters.
Family was always most important to Fred. He is preceded in death by his wife of 35 years Elizabeth (Betsy); his parents Edwin and Thekla Wiedenfeld; his brothers William Wiedenfeld Sr. and James Wiedenfeld; his son Walter Wiedenfeld; his daughter Mary Wiedenfeld Dunham; and his grandson Jeremy Dunham.
Fred is survived by his wife Merle Wiedenfeld; his sister Doris Blethrow of Santa Barbara, California; his son-in-law Raymond Dunham of San Antonio, Texas; by his nieces and nephews and their spouses: Bill Jr. and Jan Wiedenfeld of San Angelo, Texas; Barbara and Doug Vogt of Boerne, Texas; Lili and Karl Pohl of Houston, Texas; Justin and Lydia Blethrow of Oakland, California, and other extended family and beloved friends.
There will be a Reception and Visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
