He was preceded in death by his mom Olive; his sisters, Marilyn Walker and Frances Dumas; and he will be reunited with his beloved wife, Dawn H. Carter who he was married to for 37 years when she peacefully passed away in 1998.
Fred is survived by: his son Fred Jr. and granddaughter Amber; his son Michael and granddaughter Samantha and her husband Jonathan Weaver, great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Jemma, and grandson Taylor and his fiancée Madeline Fordham; his daughter Cathy Ramirez and granddaughter Christina, granddaughter Jessica and her husband Mike Tran, and great-granddaughters Maddie and Lexi; his daughter Susan Hoelting and granddaughters Melissa and Brianna, along with their father, Dale; his son Bill and his wife Melanie, granddaughter Jessica and her fiancée Avery Martin and great-granddaughter Maeve, granddaughter Rio and her husband Nic Arrington, and great-granddaughter Amelia, granddaughter Daphne and her husband Jacob Christian and great-granddaughter Willa, granddaughter Priscilla, and grandson Rome. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Fred proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953, during which he worked as a communication translator in the Korean War, an experience that instilled a profound sense of patriotism. After his military service, Fred devoted over 35 years to education, teaching at St. Mary’s University, where he was highly respected for his extensive knowledge and unwavering dedication to his students, plus, he was able to provide free college education to all his children! Fred was an enthusiastic sports fan, with a strong passion for baseball. He shared his love of sports by coaching numerous kids, including his own, in sports such as soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball through the CYO Sports Organization. In addition he spent many years volunteering at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and loved ushering 8:00 am mass!
Fred, who loved to laugh often, will be deeply missed by all who knew him and was touched by his intellect, compassion, and consistent support.
The Rosary will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 8134 Blanco Road, San Antonio, with Mass celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
