

LTC Garland William Dorries, age 91, born in Port Lavaca, TX, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013. He moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1923.
Garland attended grade school from 1927-1939, San Antonio Vocational and Technical High School and Jackson College in Hawaii in 1961. He married Lois K. Horn on July 20, 1940. They had two children a daughter on November 25, 1943 and a son on December 24, 1946.
Garland served in the AAF/USAF from January 1942 to October 1969. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1944-1945 completing 38 combat missions, 536 combat hours and was awarded his first Distinguished Flying Cross. He served in Korea from July 1951 to 1952. He was stationed in Japan from July 1952 to 1953, Hawaii July 1958 to May 1961, and Germany from June 1964 to March 1967. LTC Dorries served in Vietnam from July 1967 to August 1968 accumulating 513 combat hours in C-123 aircraft. He supported the KHE-SAHN Offensive and was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of his second DFC. He was promoted to 2nd Lt on February 16, 1943, 1st Lt on February 1, 1944, Captain on October 26, 1944, Major on January 21, 1955 and LTC on April 14, 1965. He was rated Pilot on February 16, 1943, Sr. Pilot in February 1951 and Command Pilot in February 1958. He was awarded the Air Medal and 7 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
After military service he worked at Alamo Iron Works from December 1969 to October 1984 as Supervisor of fleet Maintenance, retiring in October 1984. He was a volunteer at WHMC in the Main Pharmacy for 22 years.
Garland was preceded in death by his son, Garland W. Dorries, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Lois K. Dorries of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Susan J. Downs and her husband, CWO4 Robert W. Downs of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Cynthia Heywood of Houston, TX, Kathleen Hernandez and her husband, Alian of Houston, TX, Benjamin Dorries of Boulder, CO, and Richard S. Downs of Dallas, TX; great grandson, Aidan Hernandez.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
