It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Phillip Greenberg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on May 5th, 2024. Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to his relatives, friends, and community.
Gary is survived by his wife Marsha; daughter Barbie; son Bobby and wife Kim; grandchildren Riley and husband Phil, Cooper and wife Deaven; sister Evelyn; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Born October 8th, 1940, Gary was a native of San Antonio, Texas. He attended the historic Thomas Jefferson High School; and sustained a lifetime of civic and personal involvement with his alma mater. Gary attended the University of Texas at Austin and demonstrated his enduring affection for the Longhorns by donning burnt orange on every occasion possible.
Gary’s life would be irrevocably changed during Spring Break in 1959, after meeting Marsha at his sister’s backyard party. According to Gary, while walking back to his car, he announced to his friend Barry that he was going to “marry that girl”. He and Marsha Faye Hafkin were married at Agudas Achim Synagogue in July of 1960 and spent the next 63 years creating a life and family together. Gary’s true joy came from his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He took great pride in the relationships he had with his family; and was delighted as the family grew to include Riley’s husband Phil and Cooper’s wife Deaven in 2022. He shared a unique bond with each member of his family; sharing their interests and passions, offering wisdom and debate- but his favorite moments were times around the dinner table, sharing a meal (preferably barbecue), with his favorite people. Marsha and Gary shared a devotion and dedication to one another that has served as an example to the next generations; and Marsha remained the love of his whole life.
For his tenth birthday, Gary received his first camera, a Kodak Brownie, which he described as a life changing event. This started his life-long interest in photography and ultimately his business career in the photographic industry. In his professional life, Gary was a visionary leader, known for his innovation and integrity. He pursued excellence in all endeavors, leaving an indelible mark over his 30-year career with Fox Photo. His contributions were not only nationally recognized but valued by colleagues and peers alike. Following this chapter of his life, Gary continued working as a business consultant, well into his 70s. After retiring, Gary became more involved in his community, devoting his time and energy to local causes and to leading his neighborhood HOA. Gary was profoundly grateful for the friendships and support of their dear neighbors.
Gary would go on to publish 3 books which included reflections on photography, business, and family ancestry. In Mispocha, he painstakingly researched and documented a narrative and pictorial documentation of his people’s history. He said that it was not only interesting, but important to know from “whence you came”. Gary never stopped learning or creating, and his most enduring legacy may be the art that graces the homes of his family and friends. Capturing the beauty and imagery of his life, Gary’s mosaics will continue to be treasured.
Gary’s impact extended far beyond his immediate circle. He was a mentor and trusted advisor to many and dedicated much of his time to making a difference in the lives of others. Always civic minded, he will be remembered as a man of character and goodwill.
While we mourn the loss of a wonderful and unique individual, we also celebrate the profound impact that Gary had on all our lives. His spirit will continue to inspire us, and his memory will forever be a blessing.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to enjoy a meal and conversation with your family and friends (preferably barbecue).
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, May 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Agudas Achim Memorial Gardens, 1727 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218.
