Gary Randall Speer peacefully departed his earthly life on August 6, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on September 24, 1937, in his family's home in the small town of Van, Texas, Gary's life was a narrative woven with threads of faith, family, and a deep love for his country.
A proud survivor of the 1947 Texas City explosion, Gary left an indelible mark on his community by designing the foundation for and overseeing the installation of the memorial anchor from the SS *Grandcamp* at Anchor Park. This lasting tribute is a testament to his meticulous craftsmanship and commitment to honor history.
Gary's journey led him from Van, to Mexia, to Texas City, and eventually to Huntsville, Texas, where he attended Sam Houston State University. While pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts, he met the love of his life, Ann. Their meeting was fate. A photographer on campus approached Ann and asked if she wanted to take a picture with two young men nearby. Ann looked over, and when she saw Gary, she said yes and knew exactly which one she wanted. Though they initially parted ways, Ann later saw Gary again on campus, and this time, she summoned all her courage to approach him. Little did she know, Gary had been thinking about her too, and he didn't let her out of sight until he asked her on their first date. Together, they embarked on a journey that would endure the test of time.
His academic pursuits laid the groundwork for a successful career as the founder and owner of Speer Company and later as the founder and President of GR Speer and Associates, LLC. His professional life reflected his intrinsic values: loyalty, hard work, and honesty.
While briefly exploring music in his youth, Gary quickly found his true calling in sports. As an offensive lineman in football and a catcher in baseball, he showcased his athletic prowess, even considering a professional baseball career. However, golf captured his heart, becoming a lifelong passion he enjoyed sharing with his brothers, family, and friends. His love for the game was only eclipsed by his devotion to God. As a Deacon at his church, Gary cherished teaching Sunday school, embodying the essence of a faith-filled and thoughtful man.
At the heart of Gary's life was his deep faith and devotion to his family. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding his actions and inspiring those around him. Gary's zest for life was evident in his many hobbies. He enthusiastically embraced life's adventures, from golf, fly fishing, and bird hunting to constructing model airplanes and camping with his children. His greatest joy came from supporting his family, never missing a child's game or family event.
The Christmas season held a special place in Gary's heart. As a child, he and his brothers would try to catch Santa in the act, a cherished memory that always brought a smile to his face. Later in life, with Ann, he hosted memorable annual Christmas Eve dinners with exciting scavenger hunts that became cherished family traditions. Gary's eyes would light up with more joy in giving presents than receiving them, embodying the season's true spirit.
Known for his stoic exterior, those who knew Gary well discovered a heart overflowing with compassion and generosity. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, a true embodiment of his faith in action.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Lee Speer and Juanita McReynolds Speer, and his sister, Suzanne Speer Campbell. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Speer; his brothers: Philip Speer and his wife, Carole; Dennis Speer and his wife, Kathy; and Craig Speer and his wife, Linda; and by his children: Carl Speer and his wife, Nancy; Amy Simpson and her husband, Charlie; Randy Speer and his wife, Teri; and Deborah Millander and her husband, Colonel (Retired) Chris. We celebrate a life of purpose and grace as we bid farewell to Gary Randall Speer. His legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. We take comfort in knowing that Gary is now at peace in Heaven. His life embodied the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." He was a peacemaker in his family, community, and all aspects of his life. His unwavering faith was rooted in the promise of John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This faith sustained Gary throughout his life and now comforts those who mourn his passing.
In Gary's honor, let us strive to embody his values: faith, family, and service. His was indeed a well-lived life, a shining example of the profound impact one can have when guided by love, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to what matters most.
