who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;who has gained the respect of intelligent men and women and the love of children;who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;who leaves the world better than he found it,who has never lacked appreciation of Earth’s beauty or failed to express it;who looked for the best in others, and gave the best he had.-- Robert Louis Stevenson
George’s long and beautiful life began on November 17, 1931, born to William and Ada Conner near Darlington, Florida. He grew up in rural and humble beginnings, which helped to shape him into the man he became. Sadly, George left us on June 27, 2023, leaving a great void in our hearts. But through the fond memories of him, he will continue to be present in our lives forever.
One of the first things people remember about George is that he was very friendly. He was always happy to meet you and found it easy to show his appreciation. It is often remarked that George was a true gentleman, kind, generous, and a good man.
It was not long after leaving home that George met and married the love of his life, Mary Sue Howerton, and together they began a blessed and happy 62 years of marriage. They started their lives together in Maryland and raised a family of three children - Richard, Beth and James.
As a career, George had a life of service to our country first as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and then becoming one of the original employees of the then new National Security Agency where he worked for over 35 years.
George’s real passion in life, however, was as a gardener. He enjoyed the labor and toil of preparing his homes with beauty and making them welcome to all. It was a form of prayer for him and his praise of God, his Creator.
George fully retired in 1999 and he and Mary moved to San Antonio, TX to be closer to his only grandson, Daniel. Little did George know he would also find a new daughter in Juany (James’ wife). The two formed a bond that was very special like two peas in a pod which will last forever.
The Conner family offers its gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Independence Hill, Garden Ridge Assisted Living, and San Antonio Home Health & Hospice for making George’s final years and days comfortable and peaceful.
George is united in heaven with wife Mary, daughter Beth, parents William and Ada, and siblings William (Harley) and Nora. George is survived by his sons Richard and James, daughter-in-law Juany, grandson Daniel, as well as his “adopted” grandchildren, Christian and Melissa Hernandez.
Your sympathies and condolences are welcome and very comforting to our family in this sad time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to the American Diabetes Association
