

A 1935 graduate of the United States Military Academy, he completed regular courses at The Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1939; The Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1954; and the National War College, Fort McNair, Virginia in 1958.
During World War II, he commanded the Third Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 9th Armored Division.
His battalion participated in the defense of Luxembourg, Bastogne, and the capture of bridge over Rhine River at Remagen.
His assignments overseas included postings in Japan, Taiwan and Pakistan.
He was the Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division from 1965-1967.
His last post was Deputy Commanding General, Fourth U.S. Army and, concurrently, Commanding General, Fort Sam Houston.
His interests included sports; he was a fine horseman, and had a life long interest in military history, frequently contributing articles.
He was a member of The Company of Military Historians, and American Military Institute, among others.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam S. Ruhlen; sons, George Ruhlen and Stephen S. Ruhlen; daughters-in-law, Karan Ruhlen and Mary Ellen Ruhlen; grandchildren, Lisa Ruhlen and Stephen Paul Ruhlen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Downtown Youth Center, 1215 West Poplar, San Antonio, TX 78207 or to a charity of choice.
Honorary pallbearers are Lt. Col. Milton Shifflett, Col. Joseph R. Sanchez, Gen. Ralph E. Haines, Col. Edwin H. Ferris, Col. Sidney G. Spring, and Mr. Dan Cook.
