Gerald lived and grew up on the south east side of San Antonio on Olive Street. He spent a great deal of memorable time with the Cortines family, especially Lance who was a life-long friend to Gerald and his entire family. After graduating from Highlands High School in 1960, he joined the National Guard and went to work in the civil service at Kelly AFB where he worked for 35 years until his retirement at 55.
Gerald loved tinkering with cars; he and his son restored a 1967 Camero and a 1964 ½ Ford Mustang. However, his favorite was a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback he kept for the majority of his life. He loved going to the drag races and to the Pan American speedway to watch the round and round races.
He spent countless Saturdays with his best friend Bill “Willie” Scholl going for tacos, barbequing or working on a project for the day. One of his favorite experiences was when he and Willie drove the famous Route 66 from Texas to California in Willie’s 1959 Chevrolet Corvette.
Gerald loved spending time with his family. When his children were still at home, the family often went to the beach on North Padre with relatives and friends. He also took Jerry and Leanne on several ski trips in their young adult lives. Later in life, Gerald and Jackie went to the coast every summer with his son, Jerry, and his family. For over 20 years, one of Gerald’s favorite weekly past times was having breakfast every Friday with his daughter, Leanne, who often had her kids in tow when they were little.
He married Jacquelyn “Jackie” Jones on July 12, 1997 and was a devoted and loving husband to her for over 25 years. They took numerous trips together in the US and abroad. Gerald and Jackie were very involved with St. Pius Catholic Church. They both volunteered for numerous church events. He was an active member in the Acts community and in the Knights of Columbus.
He and Jackie were pet lovers and enjoyed their time with their Golden Retriever, Redford and later, their Labrador mix rescue, Riley, who was always by their side.
Gerald was often the life of the party and the de facto bartender making margaritas or pina coladas for each and every guest.
He also adored being an Opa to his 4 grandchildren and loved attending their various activities and watching them grow up.
He was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife Jackie, his brothers Emertt Jr. “Junior” and Clark, his sister Dorothy, and his parents and grandparents. Gerald is survived by his son, Jerry W. Rumpf and his wife Rayleen; daughter, Leanne D. Hulse and her husband William “Butch”, grandchildren, Jane, Maddie, Will and Hudson; and multiple nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
