In 1984, he moved to San Antonio to work with his brother and sister-in-law at Elton George & Company. In 2002, Gerry joined St. John's United Methodist Church, where he became active on the Board of Trustees and other committees. Gerry was also a founding member of the Alamo Business Council, where he held several positions over the years.
One of his favorite hobbies was gardening, and he loved traveling and spending time with his family and friends, especially at Lake LBJ. He also loved playing bridge, dancing, as well as being surrounded by all of his dogs.
Gerry had a hearty laugh and a twinkle in his eye that made people smile. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Gerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elton and Callie Neville George of New Home, Texas, and Ben and Buelah King of Lamesa, Texas; his parents, Grayam and Floy Ben King George of New Home, Texas; and his stepmother, Irene Adams Wilson George of Paducah, Texas.
He is survived by his best friend and partner of 19 years, Jim Rhodes of San Antonio; his brother, Elton George and wife Leslie, also of San Antonio; his nephew, Tommy George, wife Amanda and their daughter Lillian of Amarillo; his niece, Jennifer George Hargis and her husband Charlie of San Antonio; his cousins, Jay Wiginton and wife Laverne of Canyon Lake, and Lauren and Lindsay Wiginton of San Antonio; plus many loving extended family members and special friends.
The family is very grateful of the true dedication and sincere support given by the staff at The Cancer Center, the entire 2nd floor staff at Northeast Methodist Hospital, plus the wonderful and vigilant friends that called and rallied around the hospital for the past 12 days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests those desiring to give memorials in loving memory of Gerry, contribute to the Handicap Accessibility Fund at St. John's United Methodist Church 2002 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78228. This was the last personal project that Gerry was extremely involved with at his church, and one that he knew would help many people in his congregation.
