Gilmer Dale McDaniel, 73, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. Born April 17, 1944 in Lubbock, Texas, Gil was the youngest child of Ruby and Weldon McDaniel. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Shirlee, and his three children: Stephen McDaniel, Debbie McDaniel Carter (Chris), and Amy McDaniel Dugelby (Jim). Papa is survived by his seven grandchildren: James, Nicholas, Jackson, Joseph, Cora, Emma, and Cameron. Gil also is survived by his older sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Ken Neher of Lubbock, Texas and his older brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Kay McDaniel of Abilene, Texas. Gil leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and his precious pup, Maggie Mae.
He graduated from Monterrey High School in 1962 and attended Texas Tech University. He started working for the Frye Roofing Company in Lubbock at age 18. Married to Shirlee in 1967, Gil worked hard and rose through the corporate ranks. Owens Corning Fiberglas acquired Frye Roofing in 1977 and he continued to rise in position and stature at the company. His work of 40 years moved the family to many states including Illinois, Utah, California, Ohio and finally back to Texas.
Gil always had a tale to tell that usually started with, "I once knew an old boy who…". He was rarely at a loss for a funny story to fit any situation. Gil and Shirlee entertained often and there were always plenty of BBQ, cocktails and fun to go around. Wonderful family memories were made sitting around the pool and cooking on his beloved grill. An avid golfer, Gil and Shirlee often took clients to the many golf courses in Texas and all around the country. One of his best golf moments came at Rayner Ranch Golf Club in 2005, where he shot a hole-in-one! Whether known as Smiley, Mac, Gil, G-Guy, or Papa, Gilmer Dale McDaniel will be missed by all.
