It was a beautiful spring day on March 31, 2011, when Glenna Birdine (Brune) Wood, 99, passed away quietly and peacefully at a nursing facility in Bryan/College Station, Texas. She was born on March 20, 1912 (always the first day of spring) in Post Oak Pointe, Texas to Louis W. and Martha A. (Hoppe) Brune (both deceased).
Throughout her life she was active in military, civic, political and community organizations in the San Antonio, TX area. Playing golf was one of her favorite past times and she participated in that sport into her mid-80's. She always walked the course, pulling her cart along behind her. Bridge was another one of her favorites as that gave her time to be with her numerous outreach of friends. She loved to sing and played the organ with great rhythm. She and her husband, Joe, loved the outdoors, the chirping of the birds outside their kitchen window and entertaining friends in their home in the Hollywood Park area of San Antonio , TX . One of the most remarkable stages of her life was she received a quadruple bypass when she was 90 years old. Her heart was in perfect condition up until the day of her death, but other complications about her health quieted her and took her home to be with Our Lord in a beautiful, peaceful Heaven.
Mrs. Wood was a person who enjoyed life and "lived her life to the fullest." Her warmth, friendliness, and appreciation to others were outstanding qualities about herself. She never failed to tell someone "Thank You" showing her kindness and thoughtfulness to others. Her smiles and her sense of humor brought warmth to whomever she knew. She gave to others with an open heart of willingness and gratitude. Her attributes about living were always thinking and giving to others.
Her friend and companion for a number of years was her dog, Buttons.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Colonel Joe T. Wood (retired); her brothers, Lawrence G. Brune, Belfred Brune, and Ellis Brune.
Surviving Mrs. Wood is her nephew, Patrick W. Brune and his wife, Barbara N. of College Station, TX; a great nephew, W. Finger; two great-great nieces, Alyssa L. Finger and Sarah M. Brune.
Other extended and numerous family members surviving her live in the New Ulm , TX area.
The Graveside Service will he held at 11:45 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery; San Antonio, TX.
