Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1947, to Jose Fiol Bigas and Tennie Lay de Fiol, Gloria is survived by her husband, Daniel; daughters Cristina, Gloria Beatriz, and Andrea; grandchildren Nina, Leela, Joaquin, Julia Elena, and Christian; sisters Lidia, Mary, and Carol; sons-in-law Aaron Dhir, Faustino Aguinaga, and Larry Quintanilla.
Gloria was an incredible woman - intelligent, skillful, caring, and magnanimous across her roles of wife, mother, teacher, and cultural organizer.
She met her life partner, Daniel Rodriguez of Havana, Cuba during their freshman year at The Catholic University in Washington, DC. She graduated with a B.A. in English in 1968, and the two married later that year. In 1972, they moved from Galveston to San Antonio, where they settled and have lived since. They shared 57 wonderful years together as husband and wife before Gloria passed from neurological decline due to Lewy body dementia in April 2026. Her three accomplished daughters and large extended family were the center of her life.
Gloria was also dedicated in life to promoting culture and literacy. In 1984 she co-founded the Puerto Rican Heritage Society of San Antonio, serving in all positions of leadership across 24 years of service to the Sociedad. She worked as a school teacher for Edgewood ISD, teaching hundreds of children to read and write in 1st grade. She cared for her family, friends, students, and community with great warmth, generosity, and persistence.
With immense sadness for our loss and in gratitude for all that she gave us, the family invites Gloria’s friends and family members for a celebration of her life on May 7, 2026, at Porter Loring North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E. Visitation hours with family will take place from 4-6pm, followed by a memorial service from 6-7pm.
