My memories of Grant are very special. He had a positive impact and influence on many children and faculty when he was teaching that will exist for years to come. I was "Smiley" to him in my sixth grade year at Jackson. After having practically all Bass kids in his classroom, what an honor to be his "Smiley!" Grant was employed by me at Jackson Middle School. He was one of those faculty members who always gave 110%. 
His attitude and spirit reflected a true love of teaching and his guidance to his students was always firm but fair. He was truly "a diamond in the rough!"

Grant was one of the greatest men I have known in my life. Next to my own father, he has had the biggest impact on my life. When I think of Grant, I think of several things: a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor; duty and honor to country; devoted husband and father and grandfather; honesty, integrity and hard work; a memorable 2 week fishing trip to Cedar Bayou with the Lynch family; father of my first wife, Patsy. My deepest sympathies and great respect are extended to Helen, Robert, Angela, and their daughters Elise and Kristin

Mr. Butler was an incredible man in many ways. I was honored to be a part of his life. Despite his condition he would also greet me with a smile. I wish I could have been more involved with him during better times to learn the enormous lessons that he could share with the younger people. His wall of honor depicts the great man he was to the safety and pride of our country. Mrs. Butler is an remarkable woman in her our rights, the influence that she had on me during my senior year of high school will be a treasured time. Knowing his faith in God will give his family comfort in the future. Our community will miss this wonderful man. I have no doubts that God has received him as the hero that he is. My deepest sympathy to the Butler family.

Grant was my "buddy" as a fellow faculty member at Jackson Middle School. 
He had a great work ethic, could tell good stories, and was a fun guy. He will be missed and I am sorry to hear of his passing. No doubt the family will have great memories of Grant as do I.

The world has just lost a very wonderful man. Mr. Butler was the best teacher I ever had in my 17 years of education. He was an inspiring, motivating individual who treated his 6th graders with dignity and respect. He encouraged me to set my goals high and to work hard to achieve my full potential. Although I no longer live in SA, I was fortunate enough to get to visit with Mr. Butler about 6 years ago while I was home visiting my parents. He looked and acted almost as young as he did in 1966. He gave me an envelope, which was full of poems I had written while I was a student in his class. I remember that he told me that he was going to keep the poems because someday I would be famous. He was always making his students feel special like that. How amazing that he kept those poems all that time! He was able to make me feel special, even at age 42. In 6th grade, I was an A student. However, I did not possess any artistic ability. I would always make an S satisfactory in art, which bothered me. I begged Mr. Butler to give me an E excellent in art on my last report card. He teased me by giving me the grade I requested, but writing it with quotation marks around it "E". I doubt that there are many people in this world who have the ability to be both outstanding in the military AND an exemplary elementary school teacher. Mr. Butler was very special, and made a huge impact on many, many people. Sincerely,

So many conversations and events are wonderful memories with my friend Grant Butler. He started as my 6th grade teacher and taught almost all of my younger siblings at one time or another and my older brother Bill as well. Mr. Butler and Helen were so kind to my parents and family through the years. It is hard to describe, but there are only a few people that you can communicate with so fully that years without seeing each are erased by a phone conversation. He had a rare, truly rare sense of humor, a strong sense of what was right and wrong, and valuable insights into the important things in life from his experiences in WWII. I was blessed to have it passed to me during my high school years while being his summer painting help and the meaningful many years since that time. We painted houses together every summer and I continued on with my brothers to pay for college. It was absolutely more than earning money. The time with him molded me to handle life. I was 16 or 17 when he decided it was time to quit paying me by the hour and make me a partner. I was a kid yet he wanted to show me how to deal with people, make decisions, and take responsibility. He didn't say it, but that was love. Our friendship grew from an adolescent to adult where just an hour lunch at Lubys with Grant and Helen filled months of thoughts. I was truly blessed to have Mr. Butler cross my path. His friendship will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to Helen, Robert and Angela and his family. We feel honored and humbled to have known such a hero and fine man, and will miss him. We would also like to extend our sincere condolences to the

Mr.Butler was a wonderful man. He loved kids and always tried to teach and support them. I remember so clearly when I was running track in Middle School and I was 2nd to last in the 880 run. Mr. Butler yelled out, "Go Dimler", so loud that I think everyone had to of heard it. I ended up in second place after that. Thanks Mr. Butler, for all the encouragement you always gave to me and all of my brothers and sisters. Mrs. Butler, may God Bless you and give you comfort in this time of loss. He is at peace!
