Guadalupe Martinez Fischer passed away on April 24, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 28, 1938, she was the eldest of a large family of 12 siblings, a role that shaped her lifelong devotion to caring for others.
Raised in humble beginnings as the daughter of sharecroppers, she carried responsibility with strength and grace from an early age, helping ensure her family had what they needed. Though she did not always live in the same household as all her siblings, her sacrifices helped provide opportunities they might not otherwise have had. While living at the YWCA, she put herself through nursing school at Santa Rosa Hospital, ultimately achieving her LVN Level 3 - the highest pathway at the time, demonstrating the determination and independence that would define her life.
Guadalupe dedicated her life to service. As a nurse, she extended compassion and care to countless individuals, always guided by a simple question she lived by: “How can I serve my family?” Her devotion to others was unwavering, whether in her professional life or at home. While both maintained their regular jobs, Lupe also worked tirelessly alongside Fred at their family restaurant, The Chili Bowl, striving to give their children every possible opportunity to succeed. In addition to her family and career, Guadalupe was active in her community. She served as the Democratic Chair for her precinct, always seeking ways to give back and uplift others.
Family was at the center of Guadalupe’s world. She showed up to every game, every milestone, and every moment that mattered. She was a great mother, a constant presence, and a guiding force who inspired generations. Her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren, many of whom followed in her footsteps of service: Trey became a lawyer and Member of the Texas House of Representatives, Joyce became a nurse, Jennifer went into both the medical field as a respiratory therapist and medical sales as a great representation of both parents; a granddaughter who became a physician, and other grandchildren who are pursuing careers in healthcare. Among those who carry on her legacy are her grandchildren: Ashley, Chelsea, Jada, Sophia, and Evan, children of Joyce; and Francesca and Camilla, children of Trey. Each of them brought immense joy to her life, and she took great pride in watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and sharing in their milestones. Her love and guidance will continue to live on through them, a lasting reflection of the strong family bonds she nurtured throughout her life.
Guadalupe was known for her strong will, her old-fashioned values, and her commitment to doing things the right way. She kept everyone on time, rose early at 5:00 a.m., and lived by a steady rhythm of discipline and care. Yet alongside her strength was a warm and joyful spirit. She loved cooking for her family—especially her arroz con pollo, picadillo, and carne guisada. She enjoyed bingo, and found happiness in Tejano music and mariachis. She had a sweet tooth and could happily finish a box of truffles. Her favorite color was red, a fitting reflection of her vibrant and passionate life.
She was a deeply devoted wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, community member and friend. A pillar of strength, she cared for her husband selflessly, ensuring he remained at home until his final hospitalization. Her resilience and love were especially evident during her own 17-year journey with Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy body dementia, which she faced with remarkable courage, dignity, and grace.
She will be remembered as a very strong woman who always made things work, no matter the challenge. Her sacrifices ensured her family had the best opportunities possible, including private education and the foundation to succeed. Her love, discipline, and generosity touched all who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Patricia, her devoted caregiver, who cared for Guadalupe as if she were her own mother.
