

Guillermo Alfonso Garcia, also known as Bill Garcia, passed away on September 26, 2016 at the young age of 77. He was born on February 10, 1939 in San Antonio, TX and was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Carlos C. Garcia and Cecilia De Leon Garcia and his brother Jose C. Garcia.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nedra Barrera Garcia and his children; son Roland Garcia with his wife Ely Garcia and children Rene Garcia and Erika Garcia; daughter Viveca Garcia; daughter Belinda Garcia and her children, granddaughters Nicole Hernandez, and April Ponce and grandson Gabriel Ponce; daughter Monica Monterrubio and her husband Damon Monterrubio; great grandchildren Aubrey Gaspar and Max Magana; and his three remaining brothers and four sisters.
Bill proudly served in the USMC from 1957-1960 with his MOS in Communications. He was both a cryptographer and tele typist during his years of service. On August 14, 1960, once he Honorably Discharged from the USMC, he married his high school sweetheart Nedra. Bill began his Civil Service career at Ft. Sam Houston Army Base in 1962 and advanced to supporting the HCSSA, Health Care Systems Support Activity, as a computer operator. He was one of the first trainees selected to become a Computer Programmer in 1979, just as computers were making their impact on the world. He retired from Civil Service in July 1993 after 35 years of service as a Computer Systems Analyst and was awarded the Department of the Army ‘Commanders Award for Civil Service’.
After retirement, Bill built a workshop in his backyard and began woodworking for his family and friends. His love was reflected in the beautiful things he made out of wood from furniture to mementos. He also approached golf as serious as a career and was elected president of his golf club, served until 2012 and remained loyal to his Monday Golf days with his son and his brothers right up to the very end.
Bill Garcia left a lasting impact on everyone he touched with his generosity, love, and the cherished wood gifts he left behind. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunset Funeral Home at 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio TX, 78218.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 2nd at 6:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 3rd at 1:30 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with a Committal Service to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
