

She was born Gwynn Ann Dowell on December 19, 1939 in Lubbock, Texas, to Martha Elizabeth “Beth” and G.C. "Mule" Dowell. She attended Texas Technical University, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development and a teaching certificate. She attended graduate school at Texas Tech, the University of Maryland, and later, the University of Texas at San Antonio.
She taught elementary school in Lubbock until she relocated to the Washington D.C. area in 1965, where she continued teaching in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She lived in northern Virginia until 1985 when she, her husband and two sons moved to State College, PA. She moved to San Antonio in 1992, where she taught first grade at Larkspur Elementary School for 10 years until retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Capt. David C. Cross, USMC, and brothers Edwin Stephen (“Steve”) and John Michael Dowell. She is survived by her son, Daniel Stephen John Cross, his partner Zeenat Potia, and granddaughters Shireen Viveka Potia-Cross and Samira David Potia-Cross, all of Cambridge, MA, as well as niece Stephanie Dowell of Schertz, TX, nephew Jimmy Dowell of Cash, TX, cousin June Voelcker of Boerne, TX, sister-in-law Sandra Dowell of Weatherford, TX, and many, many friends.
Gwynn loved people, especially children, and her granddaughters brought joy and delight to her final years. She loved gathering with friends and family, playing mah jong and bridge, and being in the loving presence of others.
A memorial service will be streamed online on Saturday, April 17, at 11:00 CDT from the Porter Loring North Chapel, 2102 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX. Friends and family may attend in person but are encouraged to attend virtually due to the pandemic. Her ashes will be buried in the Dowell family plot in Royse City, TX.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Larkspur Elementary School for the continued upkeep of the David C. Cross memorial teaching garden honoring her son.
