Col Harold E. Allen, US Army (Ret.), known to friends and family as Hal, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born June 3, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Naomi Fern Hall and Carl Frank Allen. In 1949 Hal met his future wife, Patricia “Pat” Locke while attending Butler University, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After receiving his master’s degree from Indiana University, he was drafted into the United States Army and went on to serve 24 years, retiring as a Col in 1979. During his military service he completed his Doctorate of Social Work from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.
After retirement from the army, Hal worked for 25 years for Clarity Child Guidance Center in San Antonio, Texas as the Chief of Social Work. Following this Hal volunteered with Steven’s Ministry through Alamo Heights UMC and at BAMC as a “Listener” working with burn patients, accumulating over 4000 volunteer hours.
Two things Hal was passionate about were travelling the world and his family. Hal was always a source of calm, reason and strength for the entire family. Whenever there was doubt as to what advice to give or decision to make Hal invariably had the ability to guide rather than direct; suggest rather than dictate, and without fail, the result was the proper course or decision.
He is preceded in death by Dusty, his furry companion of 15 years. Hal is survived by his wife of 68 years, Pat Allen; children, Sheri Valentine and husband George, Cindy Paver, and Bill Allen; grandchildren, Shane Valentine and wife Andi, Sara Paver, Jason Allen, and Sammie Allen; great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Victoria Valentine.
GOOD JOB HAL!
