It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, and grandfather, lovingly referred to as Pappa and Grandpa by his five grandchildren. He is survived by; his loving wife Zona, sons John and Jeff (Linda), and five grandchildren; Brandon (Katelyn), Kelsey, Dalton, Tatum McCracken (Tyler), and Zoe. He is joined in heaven by his mother (Aileen), father (Calvin), sister (Claudia), and infant great-granddaughter (Parker Elizabeth). Harold loved life and fought gallantly until the very end, passing with his family by his side. He was a quiet man who loved deeply and with his quick wit and dry humor, he was the center of many a family gathering. He had a fondness for anything on wheels and enjoyed too many muscle cars, trucks, and motorcycles to count. He and a group of fellow enthusiasts started a hot rod club in high school, the Barons, sponsored by the rural North East High School, later known as MacArthur, where he graduated in 1958. Following that, Harold was the first in his family to graduate college obtaining a business degree from Trinity University in 1963. He married his soulmate and wife of 61 years the day after graduation at Shepard King Lutheran Church, where he was one of the founding members of the church that began its initial gatherings at North Star Mall. He took over the family upholstery and furniture refinishing business (San Antonio Upholstery Company) in 1963. The company was started in 1940 by Harold’s father supplying mattresses to Fort Sam Houston for the Army during WWII. After forty-two years in the business, he sold the company and retired. Following, he and Zona enjoyed spending time at their country home near Flatonia, Texas, enjoying coffee at sunrise on the back porch and teaching his sons and grandchildren to fish on the banks of their stock tank.
Services will be held at Shepard King Lutheran Church, 10:00 am December 27, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. He will be laid to rest in the Colony Cemetery, Flatonia, Texas in the afternoon on the same day.
Anyone wishing to donate in Harold’s name may do so to Any Baby Can or Shepard King Lutheran Church.
