Harold E. Sussman

Born in Philadelphia in 1925 to Simon and Ida Sussman, Harold E. Sussman, brother of Milton Ellis Sussman, passed away in San Antonio, Texas on May 2, 2010 with his loving wife Ruth, and daughter Paula, by his side. Harold is survived by his wife, Ruth, his son Joel Sussman, his daughters Paula Sussman Abrams and Marjorie Sussman Love, and his granddaughters Sara and Rachel Abrams, and Katia and Alexis Sussman.

Harold was a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Textiles. Until 1969 he was a Partner at Middishade Company, a family-owned Philadelphia based men's clothing manufacturer, which was founded in 1902 by his grandfather, Mendel Sussman. Harold, always known as "a mover and shaker," re-invented himself in the real estate business by joining Lanard & Axilbund, where he founded the firm's retail division in 1973. In the workplace Harold was entertaining, vivacious, creative and loud; it was hard not to notice his unique qualities, including his work ethic and intense presence.

Helping others was part of Harold's fabric: he helped everyone he knew, from new employees to corporate executives. Harold had a passion for children and assisted many inner city youths in attending summer camp through the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ of Philadelphia, PA. Harold was a dedicated patron of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, which included helping students display their artwork in corporate offices throughout Philadelphia. Harold was also a member of Philadelphia's Union League.

Harold and his wife, Ruth, enjoyed collecting antiques, particularly early American folk art. They eventually retired, splitting their time between Pompano Beach, Florida and Bozeman, Montana. The couple later moved to San Antonio, Texas to be closer to their youngest daughter, Paula, and her family.

Cremation has taken place and the family will schedule a memorial in Philadelphia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold's honor to the charity of your choice.
