Harriet Kathleen “Kathe” Masterson passed into the loving arms of Jesus on September 15, 2026, after an extended battle with cancer, at peace in death as she was in life, surrounded by her closest friends.
Kathe was born in Japan, where her parents were both stationed in the Army, on October 16, 1956. They lived in Kentucky before her dad was eventually stationed in San Antonio.
Kathe went to Douglas MacArthur High School where she graduated in May 1975. She then went to college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 1980.
Kathe came home to San Antonio and worked a few jobs before moving to Houston to work with Marathon Oil in the IT department. She eventually ended up working for Trade Ranger, a pioneer in B2B digital marketplace for equipment sales. She oversaw training and technical writing. Kathe was very active at Memorial Drive United Methodist in Houston where she met her closest friend, Kimery McKaskle. They co-taught women’s bible studies and hosted dinner and movie night for the women’s ministry for several years.
In 2013 Kathe decided to move home to San Antonio so she could take care of her beloved father, Ted. She did contract technical writing and ended up working for USAA for several years before retiring in 2019. Kathe enjoyed her time at USAA immensely but was excited to begin the newest chapter in her life.
Kathe was very dedicated to her church, St. Matthew’s UMC. Out of her love for Jesus, she served on the board of the Day School, served as the treasurer for United Women in Faith , served on the Finance Committee, and was the secretary for the Administrative Board. She also loved teaching bible studies and Sunday School as well as planning and cooking meals for Family Dinner night for many years.
Kathe loved crafting and sewing. In fact, her dad built her a room at the back of the house just so she would have a place to do that to her heart’s content. Anyone who received a handmade item from Kathe will always treasure it as a reminder of what Kathe meant to them.
In 2021 Kathe adopted 2 cats, Beau and Cinder, and she loved them both tremendously.
Kathe would have wanted to extend heartfelt thanks and hugs to her treasured friends Matt and Elayne for helping her through the cancer journey. She wouldn’t have gotten as far along as she did without their help and their love.
Kathe is survived by her cousins Lark Hayslip and Rita McNeal of Ohio, Trisha Hoekwater of California, Nedra Keller, Kevin Masterson and Lynn Barbera of New York, Greg Masterson of Massachusetts, and Kathy Bjork of Washington.
She will be missed by her cousins and the numerous friends she leaves behind. However, we all know she is cancer-free and experiencing more love and joy than we will know this side of eternity.
Kathe’s Celebration of Life will be held at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in San Antonio on October 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
