

Harry B. Orem born November 4, 1926 in Houston, Texas passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2007. His family moved to San Antonio and he enrolled in the 5th grade at Alamo Heights. He graduated from Alamo Heights in 1944. He briefly attended the University of Texas before joining the Navy. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Maddox, USS Spangler and the USS Mansfield. He left active duty in October 1947 and joined the US Naval Reserves where he remained until retirement in 1986 as a Commander. In 1947, he returned to San Antonio where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and his Master's Degree in Biology from Trinity University. In 1953, he began his long career with Alamo Heights ISD. Before he retired in 1994, he had served the district as a coach, teacher, Assistant to the Superintendent, Assistant Principal, High School Principal, Assistant Superintendent and acting Superintendent. After retiring, he served as a School Board Trustee. He was an active a member of Alamo Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and studying naval history. In June 1948, he married Mary Fern Hawkins whom he had met at Cambridge while he was a coach and she was a first grade teacher. She preceded him in death after 58 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Tim Orem and wife, Janice of San Antonio; daughter, Kathryn Neill and husband, John of Burleson, TX; his five grandsons, Christopher and wife Katie, and Benjamin Orem and Matthew, Cooper and Brady Neill all of whom he dearly loved.
