Hector M. Diaz, Jr. passed away at the age of 72, after a long battle with colon cancer. He is preceded in death by his father Hector Diaz Sr. and beloved mother, Fidela M. Diaz. He is survived by his two sisters, Evangeline and Leticia Diaz and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He attended Bonham Elementary and Page Middle Schools and graduated from Harlandale High School in 1972; and continued to San Antonio College. Hector was the kindest person you could ever meet. No one was a stranger, and he helped all. He loved everyone, especially his family, including all animals. He had impeccable honesty and integrity. He was a good Christian man. Many received scriptures he wrote in inks of different hues, because as he would kindly account, God had created all these beautiful colors. Hector was as close to a modern-day saint as there could be.
Hector served in the United States Army. And he loved to share the many Army stories and experiences he had during his service. He had many different jobs throughout his life, but the last 13 years were spent at HEB.
Hector never married but he had a whole family of love with his mother, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and aunts, grandparents and friends throughout his lifetime. He had lived with his sister, Leticia, for the last 20 years, and the two went through his cancer journey together. Hector was never alone, including with the pets he helped raise; most lovingly so, Toby, his dog, who held a notable portion of Tito's heart.
Thanks to Ricardo Martinez and Antonio Gonzalez, long-time high school friends who made many visits to see him, especially in these last years. We shared the many high school, young adult, Army, life and work stories and experiences in the living room, with warmth, laughter and sometimes disbelief. Those memories will always be cherished.
We want to thank Jessica Garcia from Vitas Hospice who worked closely with us, providing comfort to Hector, and all the other compassionate nurses, staff and aids who were at his side during his last weeks. Our thanks to HEB, his supervisor and co-workers. And we appreciate the HEB Corporation for taking care of their employees with generous benefits and opportunities to live a good life in good times and in bad. We also thank Dr. Allyson Harroff and the staff at Texas Oncology for all the treatments and concerns during his illness. And we thank the Audie Murphy Veteran’s Hospital doctors and staff who were simply remarkable in their care and compassion. We salute all at the VA.
Hector will be so greatly missed by his sisters, his family, his friends, our friends, his neighbors and his loving Jehovah’s Witness community. May he rest in peace in the Kingdom of God.
