

Colonel Herman H. Corbitt (Ret.), age 91, left this world on March 24, 2022 joining his beloved wife, Nancy, in heaven on her birthday. What a celebration that must have been!Herman, a true redhead, was affectionately known as “Red” to his friends and family. He was born October 4,1930 in Tarboro, NC to Herman Harry and Nellie Elizabeth Corbitt. Red grew up in Clinton, NC where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Nancy LeCates Parker. They were together for 62 wonderful years (married 58) and raised four daughters, Jill, Lisa, Susan and Michele.
In high school Red was very athletic; he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball for three years and served as captain of each sport his senior year. He loved to dance and was voted Best Dancer his senior year as well. Red joined the North Carolina National guard while still in high school and was later called to active duty. He was extremely proud that he was able to complete his college degree while still serving his country in the Army. Attending the University of South Carolina in Columbia and Park College in Missouri, Red graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in economics. He also graduated from several military schools including the Command & General Staff College.
After leaving the Army, Red was employed by Civil Service as Chief of the Plans and Operations Branch, Headquarters Fifth U.S. Army and recognized as an expert in providing support to the civil sector in the event of natural disasters.
Red served a total of 48 years of combined federal service in the Guard, USAR, Army, and Civil Service. He earned numerous military medals and awards throughout his career. Serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, Red received three medals for valor including the Bronze Star.After retirement, Red and Nancy enjoyed traveling the United States. They especially loved cruising and went on over 30 cruises exploring ports all over the world. Red was an avid golfer and played every chance he could. He also enjoyed water volleyball and poker once a week with his friends at The Towers. As a devoted Christian, he held fast to his beliefs always seeking to better himself. Red was an active member of Coker United Methodist Church, Questors Sunday School Class and participated in the Walk to Emmaus several times.
Red was most proud of his family and loved to brag and share stories about them. He never met a stranger and could entertain anyone with his quick wit. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell.
Red is survived by three of his daughters, Lisa Matchell, Susan Wernette (Charlie) and Michele Geary (Flint) as well as four grandsons, Christopher Matchell, Kyle Matchell, Zachary Wernette and Cullen Wernette, one great-grandson, Thomas Matchell, great-granddaughter, Avari Matchell, and daughter-in-law Karen Stevens. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and close family friends. He will forever be in their hearts and missed very much every day.
Red is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy, daughter Jill and three sisters, Daisy, Izona and Murtice.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at Porter Loring North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 West.
