Lt Col (Ret.) Howard Nelson Tidwell, born on April 4, 1937, in Vina, Alabama, was a beacon of light and a testament to a life well-lived. His journey came to a peaceful close on September 6, 2024, in Universal City, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family.
Howard’s early life in Florida laid a foundation of values that would guide him throughout his years. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by an MBA from the University of Southern California. His education was not just a means to an end but a gateway to a world of opportunities.
A proud veteran, Howard served his country valiantly as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. His dedication to his nation was paralleled only by his commitment to his family and community. After a distinguished military career, he retired, carrying the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.
Howard was a man of deep faith, and this faith was the cornerstone of his life. His generosity knew no bounds, and his loving nature touched the hearts of everyone he met. He was the beloved husband of Lynn Tidwell, with whom he shared the joys and adventures of life, including traveling across the lower 48 states in their motorhome, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Upon retiring from the traveling life he and Lynn returned to Florida to the beach life that they so enjoyed until coming back to Texas.
He was a devoted father to his son, David Tidwell and daughter-in-law Cathy, as well as his daughter, Lori Wyant and son-in-law Michael. Howard's legacy continued through his cherished grandchildren, MAJ Trey Tidwell, Hannah & husband Dr. Steven Mulik, Potter Wyant, Maclaren Wyant, and Satchel Wyant; and great-grandchildren, Tex and Amelia Tidwell. He is also survived by his two brothers Dr. Pat Tidwell and wife Helen, Dr. Michael Tidwell and wife Betty; brothers and sisters in-law Richard Basden and wife Lavelle, Lee Baker III and wife Cathy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In every role he took on, whether as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, or veteran, Howard exuded the qualities that best defined him. His faith-filled life was an inspiration, his generosity a gift that kept on giving, and his love a warm embrace that will be dearly missed.
The departure of Howard Nelson Tidwell leaves a void that cannot be filled. Yet, in the hearts of those who knew him, his spirit remains a guiding light. His life’s journey may have come to its natural conclusion, but the path he forged remains a testament to a life of purpose, honor, and profound love.
As we bid farewell to Howard, we celebrate the legacy of a man whose life was a portrait of service, family, and unwavering commitment to the things that matter most. His memories will continue to inspire and comfort us, and his example will live on as a standard to which we can all aspire. Howard Nelson Tidwell may have left this earth, but his story is far from over. It lives on in the lives of those he touched, in the love he gave, and in the memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
