Hugh Royal Woodchick Sr., fondly known as Woody, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in San Antonio. He was born on December 8, 1932, in Columbus, WI, to Mildred and Royal Woodchick. He was an only child and traveled around as a toddler due to his father being a flight instructor in the USAF. They eventually settled in San Antonio where he began his schooling. He graduated from Hot Wells High School where he played football, basketball and tennis.
After high school, he continued his education for two years at the University of North Texas before enlisting in the US Army where he served two years during the Korean War. Upon his return to San Antonio, he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Scholtz, on a blind date. They got engaged and married within seven months of meeting. Soon after marrying, they started a family, adding three kids to the mix.
Woody had a lengthy work career. He began at Wayne Bull Auto Parts where he was a store manager and worked for over twenty-nine years. When the business closed, he began work at Besser APPCO for another twenty-two years. During this time, he also played slow-pitch softball for many years with the SA Texans. When he retired from that, he missed the ballpark so much, that he went into scorekeeping as a second job, and worked for the City of SA Recreation Department for twenty-six years.
In his spare time, he also enjoyed playing golf and watching his beloved Green Bay Packers. He instilled his love of sports into his children and eventually his grandchildren. He loved attending all of their football, baseball, softball, and soccer games. He was definitely one of their biggest fans.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, his parents; mother and father-in-law, Albina and Edward Scholtz; sister-in-law Edwina Sievers and her husband Frank; sister-in-law Agnes Janysek and her husband, Frank; sister-in-law Patricia Schmidt; brother-in-law, Edward Scholtz Jr. and his wife Renee; grandson, Matthew Drury; great-grandson, Fisher Woodchick; niece Rhonda Fowler and nephew Perry Beyer Jr.
Woody is survived by his son, Hugh Woodchick Jr. and his wife Joni; daughters, Terrie LeComte and her husband Danny, and Nanci Martin and her husband Bill; as well as nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild; brother-in-law Fred Schmidt and numerous nieces and nephews.
