Hugo A. Schweers

He attended schools in San Antonio and Hondo, graduating from Hondo High School in 1936. He graduated from Texas A & I University in 1940 and later did graduate work at Colorado State University.

He was married in October 1942, to Julia Dale 'Judy' Wahler of Raymondville, Texas.

During World War II, he served in the Navy. After graduation from Midshipmen's School at Columbia University, he volunteered for extra- hazardous duty in the newly established program of Bomb Disposal. After completing bomb disposal training at American University he served three years in the Pacific as Bomb Disposal Officer and Division Officer aboard the battleship, USS Indiana, earning one silver and four bronze stars for participation in the nine major engagements in that theater of operation.

After the war, he served in the Naval Reserve, as Commanding Officer of Naval Ordnance Companies in Oklahoma City and Austin. He retired in 1978 with the rank of Captain.

His civilian career was with the Bureau of Reclamation, planning irrigation and municipal and industrial water supply projects in New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He retired in 1976 with 34 years service.

An active member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, he served as usher, Sunday school teacher, Stephen's Minister, on various committees, the church council and as president of the congregation.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Owen, of Houston and a sister, Mimmi D. Beard, of Hondo.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; son Ken Schweers and wife, Sally of Arlington, Va., daughter, Dr. Karen S. Cook and husband, Donovan of Stanford, Calif.; son, Gregg Schweers of Seattle, Wash.; daughter Donna Schweers and husband Thomas Geiser of Santa Monica, Calif.; sisters Elvira Wiederanders of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Zelda Stephens of San Antonio; grandchildren, Clark Schweers, Brian S. Cook, Kevin S. Cook and Kelsey S. Geiser.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Hugo A. Schweers Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship fund at Stanford University established to provide financial assistance to a high school student from Texas.
