Ignacio Leija, Jr.
January 30, 1947 – October 13, 2026
Ignacio Leija, Jr. a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, proud American, and dedicated advocate for our nation’s veterans, passed away on October 13, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on January 30, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas to Delia and Ignacio Leyja, Sr., Ignacio was a man whose life was defined by dedication, perseverance, service, faith, and an unwavering love for his family. A trailblazer in his own right, he became a graduate of St. Mary’s University, a milestone that reflected his commitment to education and his determination to build a meaningful future.
One of the greatest blessings of Ignacio’s life was his lifelong love story with his wife, Martha Ann Leija. Their story began when they were just 14 years old, and the bond they formed as teenagers grew into a lifetime of love and devotion. They were married on August 3, 1969, and built a life together rooted in love, faith, commitment, and family. Their enduring relationship was a testament to a love that began in youth and continued throughout the decades.
A proud veteran of the Vietnam War era, Ignacio served in the United States Air Force and carried his patriotism with pride throughout his life. His commitment to his country extended well beyond his military service. He dedicated his professional career to supporting those who had served our nation, ultimately retiring from the American GI Forum-National Veterans Outreach Program, where he served as Vice President of Operations.
This work was more than a career to Ignacio; it was a calling that was deeply personal and near and dear to his heart. He believed that every service member and veteran deserved dignity, respect, and the assurance that their sacrifices would never be forgotten. He was passionate about ensuring veterans had access to opportunities that would allow them to thrive, become successful citizens, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Through his leadership and dedication, Ignacio helped advance a mission that reflected his deepest convictions: that those who served our country deserved to be honored, supported, and never left behind.
Ignacio’s faith was also a central part of his life. He was a Christian and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He made sure his children and grandchildren not only knew about Jesus Christ but also understood the importance of having a personal relationship with Him. He taught them to always put Christ first in their lives, and his faith, love, and example will continue to guide them for generations to come.
Above all his accomplishments, Ignacio’s greatest pride and joy was his family, especially his seven beloved grandchildren: Isaac Levi Rodriguez, Selah Elisabeth Rodriguez, Daniel Emmanuel Leija, David Aaron Rodriguez, Aaron James Rodriguez, Gabriela Raquel Leija, and Ethan Michael Rodriguez. Each held a special place in his heart, and the love he had for them was an immeasurable part of his life. His legacy will live on through them, through the values he instilled, and through the countless memories they will forever cherish.
Ignacio was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dora Leyja Morales.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha Ann Leija; his children, Deborah Ann Leija and Matthew James Leija (Amarilis); his loving siblings, Eduardo Leija, Diana Quiñones (Gilbert), Deborah Riojas (Rafael), and Ernest Leija (Malissa); his brother-in-law, John Schmidt (Maggie); and his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews, who will continue to carry his love and legacy forward. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren.
Ignacio’s life was one of purpose, service, faith, and devotion – to his country, to his fellow veterans, and above all, to the family he loved so dearly. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the impact of his life will endure in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, in the work he devoted himself to, and in the generations who carry his legacy forward.
He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and profound respect. His life was a testament to the power of commitment, and the importance of service, the strength of faith, and the enduring love of family.
