Iris Meyer Sawyer, age 106, went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2014. She was born on March 1, 1908 in Concan, TX (Uvalde County) to J. Edward & Mary Wheeler Meyer. After raising her children, she returned to college (which she had started in 1926) inspired by a needy grandson to become a Speech Therapist. Several times before her retirement, she was chosen “Teacher of the Year” at Leon Valley Elementary (Northside School District). She lived for over 75 years in Leon Valley on Sawyer Road in the home that was part of the N.C. (Tom) Sawyer (former Husband) Real Estate Development, which he started in 1936.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Carlos & Reinhart (Sam) Meyer; sister, Blanche Doyle; daughter, Mary Jo Boren (Jim); grandchildren, William Bowers, Kelley Sawyer, and Mark Simmang.
She is survived by children, Ruth Jacobs of Coral Gables, FL and Tom Sawyer (Betty) of San Antonio, TX; 18 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sister, Mary Louise Condel and numerous nieces & nephews.
The Memorial Service will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel.
The family is grateful for Roy & Charlie Parkman, devoted caregivers who made it possible for her to stay in her home until very close to the end. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
