Irma S. Nichols

April 27, 1951February 19, 2013

Irma S. Nichols, age 61, passed away on February 19, 2013. She was born on April 27, 1951 in Laredo, Texas to Eligio and Manuela Saenz. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend who will be missed dearly. Irma graduated from Texas Woman’s University in 1971. She was a licensed speech and hearing pathologist and practiced at school districts in Victoria, Bryan and San Antonio. While working in Bryan, she also earned a Ph.T. (Putting hubby Thru) degree supporting her husband Ed during his education at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. When Ed began practice in San Antonio, Irma would frequently assist in late night emergencies. Working for North East Independent School District, and being fluent in Spanish, Irma became one of a small number of certified bilingual speech therapists. She worked at many campuses during her career. She truly loved helping children. She wished to continue her career part-time after retirement; unfortunately, illness prevented this. Irma is survived by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Ed Nichols D.V.M., and their two children: Padraic and Erin. Padraic is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and is a United States naval aviator currently serving in the Middle East. Erin graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word and is a television anchor and reporter in Beaumont, Texas at KBTV Fox 4.

Although deployed far overseas, the Navy enabled Padraic to be at his mother’s side within 24 hours. Irma was so happy and proud of her children’s accomplishments. They and their dad give her all the credit.

Visitation will be 5-8pm, Sunday, February 24 at Sunset Funeral Home on Austin Highway. Funeral Rosary and Mass will be at 10:30am, Monday, February 25 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz. There will be a private burial at Ft. Sam Houston on Wednesday, February 27. Condolences may be offered at

Dear Ed,

I just received a notice that they are looking for commemoratives from residents of Texas A&M student housing. It made me think of the good times that we had at the Ball St apartments with you and Irma and Richard and Vicky Morgan. I did a search for you and found you in San Antonio. I knew you had a practice there. I continued to search and found that Irma had passed away. I am so sorry for your loss. The pictures of her have brought back even more memories of our time together at A&M. I wanted you to know that Kevin and I will be thinking of you. Our sincerest sympathies to you and your family.
