Irving Lauber age 72, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas.
He was the youngest son of Samuel and Eva Balsam Lauber, who emigrated from Vienna, Austria in 1940 with his sister, Sidi and brother, Fritz. He was born and raised in Syracuse, New York where he attended Syracuse Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1958.
He received his BA in Political Science and Sociology from Syracuse University in 1964. Following his marriage to Helenann Stolusky, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Army on active and reserve duties in Ft. Lee, Virginia, Toul, France, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and Syracuse, NY from 1964-1969. While attending graduate school, Irv was the Co-Director of Bradley Brook Camp. He received his Masters in Social Work from Syracuse University in 1969.
He joined the United Way system in that year, working in Houston, Texas; Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Cleveland, Ohio, and ending his career as the President and CPO of the Aloha United Way in Honolulu, Hawaii. During his 35 years as a United Way Professional, Irv also taught classes, did consulting work and served on task forces for the United Way of America.
He mentored many United Way Professionals and served in the United Way Retirees Board of Directors. He and his wife retired to San Antonio in 2005.
Irv was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sidi Lauber Greenfield; and his brother, Fritz Lauber.
In San Antonio, he leaves his beloved wife of 50 years; and best friend, Helenann; two sons, David and Joshua; grandsons, Samuel Benjamin, Fletcher Marley, and Greyson Ranger Lauber. He leaves his granddaughter, Zoe Oliver Lauber of Ohio; his five nephews, Michael and Gary Lauber of CA, Ron Greenfield of NJ, Joe Goldstone of TX, Ben Goldstone of CA, Jeremy Goldstone of OR; and six nieces, Delilah Lauber of CA, Michelle Lauber Schaming of NB, Carol Greenfield Chandler of NY, Stacy Greenfield Antmann of FL, Rachel Goldstone and Ruth Goldstone of CA.
Irv will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be fondly remembered for his warmth and sense of humor, caring support, principled work ethic, logical problem solving, great restaurant recommendations and his love of books and movies.
