John Charles (Charlie) Rummel Jr, born December 4, 1940, to John Charles Rummel Sr and Mary Lee (Sanders) Rummel, completed his life's journey July 26, 2022 following a long and valiant battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved son Kirk David Rummel, brother Joe, and sister Mary Cuda. Charlie is survived by his wife Joyce, stepson Brian Johnson of Irving, brothers Chester (Deana) Rummel of Corpus Christi and Boyce Rummel of LaCoste, his niece Jodie French (Tulley) and their children Mathew & Katie along with many other nieces and nephews, an uncle, aunts, a multitude of cousins and many dear friends. Jodie was more like a daughter who provided enormous support to both Joyce and Charlie throughout his long battle.
Charlie was born in Mercedes, Texas and moved to San Antonio with his family as a child. He earned money throwing newspapers from his bicycle and had fond memories playing football for Edison High School where he graduated. Charlie gravitated to sales with a particular love for real estate being a broker for 45 years. He worked alongside his long-time friends, Bob & Marcia Leyman and Bob Klemstein, in the initial land development of Padre Island in the early 1970's.
His greatest professional achievements occurred when he ventured into land development in Bexar County until he became ill in his late 70s. Land Development combined his vision, creativity and coordinating skills, often developing close personal relationships with his customers. He loved elk hunting in Colorado, New Mexico and Canada, fishing at the Gulf Coast and Venice Louisiana with his brothers & Tulley. He and his wife Joyce shared a love of traveling throughout the US, especially national parks, and 17 foreign countries during their almost 40 years together. Although they had separate careers, they worked side by side in real estate investments.
Charlie approached life with excitement and rose-colored glasses. He was spontaneous, adventurous, quick to laugh and forgive. His life was a big, loving life, lived well and his passing leaves a void in those who loved and admired him. After 4 years of struggling with cancer Charlie recently stated "I have walked through the valleys, along the river banks, through the forests, and on the mountaintops and everywhere I've seen the magnificence God has created."
