Born on April 1, 1929, to Roscoe O. Selby and Eula Harrison Selby in Van Alstyne, Texas, Jack grew to be a natural athlete with a passion for baseball and a healthy appreciation for a well orchestrated April Fool's joke. After high school, Jack played baseball for several years, landing a spot on a AAA team where he earned the nickname "Jack Rabbit" Selby for his quickness. He played until injuries forced him to move on from his favorite game.
He met the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Sally Mullican Selby, over a friendly game of cards in Sherman, Texas, and the two married in 1951 at North Park Baptist Church in Sherman.
Jack joined a milling company, Gladiola Flour Company, as a salesman, moving his new family to Corpus Christi, Texas. His hard work and endless perseverance made him the perfect salesman. He became a food broker with Busbee Brokerage Company in 1956, moving from Corpus Christi, to McAllen, Texas, until finally relocating to San Antonio in 1966.
When Mr. Busbee retired in the early 1980s, Jack took over the company, renaming it Salesmart. With a perfect blend of discipline and charm, Jack excelled at his job, often stopping by every grocery store he passed to make sure his products were displayed correctly – always with a twinkle in his eye.
After retiring in 1993, Jack golfed, hunted, fished, and made countless bowls of homemade ice cream. Always the salesman, Jack continued to sell products as a freelance broker, even briefly taking a job at a golf shop where he was able to blend three of his favorite activities: selling, golfing, and coaching.
Most of all, Jack dearly loved his family and friends, and he strived every single day to make his life a walking advertisement for what it means to be a Christian. It was the one product he never stopped selling: his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sally Selby; his sister, Betty Windler and her husband Milton Windler; his daughter, Nancy Selby Crane and her husband Dean Crane; his son, Larry Selby and his wife Natalie Selby; his daughter Suzanne Selby Filippini and her husband David Filippini; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; loving nieces and nephews; and a host of long-time friends. He is predeceased by his parents Roscoe and Eula Selby and his sister, Martinette Edwards.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary on 1101 McCullough Ave.
