On March 20, 1925, John and Mary Rose Freeman added a baby girl to their young family: Jacqueline Doris, who grew up as “Jackie”. Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky in the depression years, young Jackie, and her younger sister, Gayle, distributed apples from the tree in their yard to the neighbors nearby. She had a love of music and played the Cello as well as 3 part piano pieces with her sister and grandmother. Later she taught her children and grandchildren to play. She was also a seamstress, like her mother, and was very talented at sewing many items for herself and family members. She attended Sacred Heart School, where she learned French and perfect penmanship. After graduation she became a Secretary. One day Jackie walked by a young man working on his car. He told her, “ I know something you don’t: I’m going to marry you one day!” So, on June 14, 1947, Jackie and Marion Humkey started a long marriage of 48 years together. Marion was an ROTC Student at Hobart College and soon started serving in the Army Air Core. Since Marion was a World War II pilot, Jackie spent many long deployments without him. Soon they started a family: First was Tom, followed by Marilyn, Martha, John and then Rosemary. Jackie always said that having a family was the best thing for her. She was a very good Catholic Christian woman and loved the Lord and His ways. Jackie served at the church faithfully and supported many Christian ministries over the years. She was always baking cookies and pies, including Cottage Cheese Pie, Spaghetti Sauce with cinnamon in it, and her specialty, Yeast Rolls, which were the main attraction on holidays. Having 5 children in 8 years kept everything very busy in the Humkey household. The military transferred this family from Upstate New York, to Chanute AFB, Illinois, to Randolph AFB, Texas, to Hickam AFB, Hawaii, to Scott AFB, also in Illinois, to Kelly AFB, Texas (again), then to Clark AB in the Philippines, and back to finally retire in San Antonio. Jackie’s family was growing up and moving out to various places around the country, and she and her husband took several vacations to places like Ireland and Europe. As time progressed Marion became less and less able to get around due to many years of Parkinson’s disease. She dutifully cared for him day and night, until Marion finally went home to Heaven in 1995. After several years on her own, Jackie moved to Houston where she resided until her death on January 22, 2015. She will always be remembered for her very loud distinctive laugh, which brought much joy to all who heard it. Jackie is survived by her sister, sister in law, 5 children, 17 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
