

He was 78 years old and preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Dolores Holland Burke, his parents Doc & Nina Burke, and his brother, Dr. Ed Burke.
Surviving him are four children: Ed Burke of Plano, TX; Peggy Huffstutler of Hollister, CA; Diana Burke-Ross of Elkins, WV; Joe Burke of Round Rock, TX; their spouses, 9 grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Ed Holland of St. Louis and his sister-in-law, Max Burke of Adel, Iowa and their families.
Jim served in the Navy during WWII, graduated from the University of Iowa with a M.S. degree in Zoology, and worked as the Chief Parasitologist for the US Army responsible for research, teachings, and personnel in the tropical medicine field. He operated laboratories in Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, Kenya, the Congo, Panama, Germany, Texas, and Washington, DC. He established a Global Medicine Course, served as Commanding Officer for laboratories throughout Latin America, and taught Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine to Special Forces troops prior to war deployment. He also taught short courses for the US Air Force, Temple University, and Johns Hopkins University. In retirement, he and Dolores enjoyed worldwide travel.
