James Bennett Calhoun, age 86, went to be with the Lord on January 1, 2014. He was born on July 15, 1927 in Charco, Texas to Samuel and Ruth Calhoun. After graduating from Goliad High School, James earned his bachelors and masters degrees from Southwest Texas Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas. He worked and put himself through college while playing basketball on the varsity team for three years. James spent 38 years in Education at Waelder, Rockport, and San Antonio, Texas. He was a life member of TSTA, PTA’s, secondary principal organizations, and served on various accreditation standards committees. In 5 years at Waelder High School, his varsity teams won 176 games and lost 26 participating in the state tournament finals twice. During his tenure as an educator, he displayed uncommon integrity and positively influenced the lives of many students, teachers and administrators, which he stayed in contact with and remained close friends. James was a member of the First Baptist and Crestview Baptist Churches, a 55+ year Mason, past member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners, and was also active in various civic organizations and Windcrest (Texas) city politics and elections. James had a number of hobbies including watching University of Texas athletics, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, collecting oil paintings, and playing dominoes. He also owned and operated a ranch on the Nueces River for 28 years raising cattle.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Vivian V. Calhoun, his parents Samuel and Ruth Calhoun, and brothers Dan Calhoun, Jack Calhoun, and Rufus Calhoun. He is survived by his son John D. Calhoun, daughter in law Joan, granddaughters Alison and Hannah of Plano, Texas and his brother Darden Calhoun of Victoria, Texas. There are also a number of surviving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Sunset Memorial Park Chapel, with the Funeral Service to follow at 3:00 PM with Pastor Marshall Moore of Crestview Baptist Church officiating. Burial Services to follow immediately. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crestview Baptist Church Living Faith Fund, 8101 Eaglecrest, San Antonio, TX 78239 or the Masonic Cemetery in Waelder, Texas.
