

James N. Castleberry, Jr., age 86, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 while on a fishing trip in Stowe, Vt. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary Ann Blocker Castleberry, and his son, James N. Castleberry III. He was born in Chatom, Alabama on December 28, 1921.
Retiring on May 31, 1992, he was Professor of Law at St. Mary's University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas from 1955-1992; teaching courses in real and personal property, land use planning, oil and gas, water rights, and comparative law; Dean from 1978 to 1989 and Dean Emeritus from 1989 to present.
He received his Juris Doctor degree number one in class, magna cum laude, St. Mary's University School of Law, 1952; Diploma, Institute of Comparative Law, National University of Mexico, 1960; Diploma First Cycle, Faculty for the Teaching of Comparative law, Strasburg, Austria 1963; Visiting Professor of Law during Summer Sessions: Texas Tech University School of Law 1979 and 1984; Southwestern University School of Law 1981; University of Alabama School of Law 1982; Cumberland School of Law, Samford University 1987; Visiting Professor of Law, Latvian Institute of Foreign Relations, University of Riga, Latvia, Spring 1992; Director, St. Mary's University School of Law Summer Program in international and comparative law, University of Innsbruck, Austria, 1986-1989; Executive Director, Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism, 1990-1992; Member of the State Bar of Texas, San Antonio Bar Association, and American Bar Association, with active service on several committees and sections. Admitted to practice in Texas, the United States Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas; Fellow, American Bar Foundation limited to top one-third of one percent of Texas lawyers; Member, San Antonio Bar Foundation; Co-Author, Waters and Water Rights, Clark, editor-in-chief, a seven 7 volume treatise on water rights in the United States, published by Allen Smith Co., 1970; Author of various articles in legal periodicals, and lecturer at state and national institutes on topics in the field of real property and natural resources law; Member, Editorial Board, Community Property Journal, 1974-1979; Assistant Attorney General of Texas, 1953-1955; President, International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, 1977-1979; Distinguished Law Alumnus Award 1985 from the St. Mary's University Law Alumni Association; Member, Senior Advisory Board, Texas Lyceum Association, 1982-1989; Trustee, Texas Supreme Court Historical Society; Board of Directors, Preservation Texas 1996; Veteran, U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, Senior Pilot, World War II, Berlin Airlift, and Korean Conflict; and listed in Who's Who in American Law .
He is survived by his six children: Jean Adsit and spouse, Eric; Nancy Castleberry; Elizabeth Brocard and spouse, Pascal; Cynthia Castleberry; Robert Castleberry and Annie Castleberry Moloney; his grandchildren: Catherine Willis, Abigail Adsit, Shanta Stevens, Alex Stevens, Logan Rodgers, Caitlin Rodgers, Niles Cockrill, Davis Bennett, Ashley Castleberry, James Castleberry, Caroline Castleberry, Natalie Moloney and Hadley Moloney; and his longtime companion, Joan Wilson Judge.
