James served honorably in the United States Navy from July 31, 1963, through June 30, 1967. He graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Batchelor of Business Administration (Accounting) December 23, 1970. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington on August 25, 1978. He was a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers. Retired from United States Civil Service. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy football fan and was a contributing member of the ACLU and Planned Parenthood organizations.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gundy. James is survived by his sister, JoAnn Shepherd; Stepdaughter, Carmen Bothell and husband, Dennis; Stepson, Glenn Janssen and wife, JimElyce; Stepdaughter, Susan Hutchinson and husband, Nigel; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
