

James graduated from Coffee High School in 1944. He then went on to attend the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity and graduated Cum Laude, Class of 1949. During World War II, he was called upon to serve with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre during the Iwo Jima Campaign. He was wounded and returned stateside, where he was awarded the Purple Heart along with other honors.
James owned and operated Cummings Custom Interiors located in San Antonio, for 35 years. While he exhibited a strong work ethic, he always remembered what came first, his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Ann; his children: James Robert Cummings Jr. (wife, Maggie) of Lee's Summit, MO, David Robert Cummings (wife, Melissa) of Pflugerville, TX and Debbie Ann (Cummings) Baker (husband, Danny) of Spring Branch, TX; grandchildren, Stacey (Baker) Kingdon (husband, Will), Kristin Cummings, Sean Cummings (wife, Gerri), Tiffany (Baker) Ritchey (husband, Joseph), James Robert Cummings III, Dwayne Baker and Shelly (Baker) Nowacek (husband, James); and a sister, Clara McGovern, of Denver, CO. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
