James “Jim” Thomas Eiler entered into eternal rest on September 14, 2026, at the age of 68. Born February 18, 1958, in Dayton, Ohio, Jim was the son of Olga Helen Stephan and Gene Harold Eiler. Raised in a military family, he moved often—an early rhythm of life that helped shape the steady devotion and loyalty that would define him in every season that followed. In later years, he resided in San Antonio, Texas.
Jim graduated from the USAF academy in 1980 and went on to serve as a fighter pilot, flying an F-15. He also served for four years as a flight trainer and instructor, bringing discipline, diligence, and a generous commitment to others in the cockpit and classroom alike. After his military service, Jim continued a distinguished career in aviation as a United Airlines pilot for 26 years, a testament to his hard-working spirit and steadfast reliability, until his retirement.
Jim married the love of his life, Dyana Foster, after they met and became friends during his training in San Antonio, Texas, before their friendship grew into a lifelong partnership. This year, they celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. Together, they welcomed a son, Justin. Jim was so proud of Justin and loved him deeply. He was always there for him and daughter-in-law, Courtney Allen-Eiler. Jim’s devotion shone especially brightly in his love for his granddaughters, Ayda and Evvie, who knew him affectionately as “Papi,” alongside Dyana as “Nani.” He also shared a one-of-a-kind bond with his sister, Patti—a proud and loyal brother who always made time for her. Those who depended on Jim knew they could: he was the kind of man who showed up, made room, and offered help without hesitation to the people he loved.
A true jack of all trades, Jim could do anything he put his mind to. He found deep satisfaction in woodworking and creating things with his hands, and he was also an avid reader— often finishing four to five books a week. His faith was a steady foundation in his life. He was dedicated to the Celebrate Recovery ministry and active in Summit Church, living his convictions with quiet strength and consistent service. Jim and Dyana also shared a love of travel, journeying together all around the world and building a lifetime of memories side by side.
Jim was known for a dry sense of humor. To those who did not know him well, he could seem guarded and private; but friendship with Jim was something earned and then deeply kept. Once welcomed in, people found a warm, devoted, and loyal friend—steady in presence, generous in spirit, and unwavering in care.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Olga and Gene Eiler; mother-in-law, Teresa Molina-Foster. He is survived by his loving wife, Dyana Eiler; son Justin and wife Courtney; granddaughters Ayda Lee and Evvie Lynn Eiler; sister Patti Taylor; beloved dogs Tex and Kaya; and beloved extended family, James Foster (father-in-law), Landy Foster-Robinson (sister-in-law), John Robinson (brother-in-law), Amber Gilbert (niece), Jonathan Lenz (nephew), Stuart Lenz (nephew), Aubrey Lenz (niece), Mark Foster (brother-in-law), Tyler Foster (nephew), Christian Foster (nephew), James Foster II (brother-in-law), Madison Foster (niece), Jack Foster (nephew), and Angie Foster (sister-in-law), Dr. Chris Tucker (brother-in-law), Jennifer Foster-Tucker (sister-in-law), Ava Christoffer (niece), Matthew Taylor (nephew), Tracy Taylor (niece), and many beloved friends.
