James Clifton Hammons

November 13, 1943November 19, 2010

James Clifton Hammons, Sr., born November 13, 1943 passed away suddenly November 19, 2010. James was born in Jacobia Texas to Jessie Dunn George and Aubrey Hammons, both preceded him in death. Heart broken by his passing is his wife of 47 years, Judy Smith Hammons. He is also survived and mourned by two wonderful children and their spouses, Kristy Ballew (Mike), and James Jr., (Sarah). He also left behind all too soon the four precious grandsons, Ethan and Dylan Hammons and Casey and Colt Ballew. Also surviving James is brother Walter (Patsy) Hammons and sister Leota Scheuren. And many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of faithful friends.

James graduated from Harlandale High School in 1961 and began his career with City Public Service, retiring with 37 years service. Upon retiring (“4PM, 1999”), he and Judy enjoyed traveling with good friends, spending special times fishing and relaxing at their coast house in Rockport Texas. Best of all was the time he spent with his four grandsons.

James was a true University of Texas Longhorn and Dallas Cowboy Fan. He loved a good time and never met a stranger. His sharp wit, humor and teasing will always be missed by those who love him most. He walked through life’s challenges with perseverance, compassion and dauntless courage. The void he leaves behind will never be filled. Honoring James as his pallbearers are Bobby Hammons, David Hammons, Kenneth Martin, Stan Stautzenberger, Will Waclawczyk and Max Voigt.

Visitation will be from 5-8:00 pm on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

To the Hammons family:

I was shocked upon learning of James' untimely passing. James and I were friends in school. We were able to stay in touch through our class reunions. Four years ago James made a profound impact on my life for that I am truly grateful. Cathey and I are sorry for your loss. James will always be in our hearts and prayers.

To Judy, James Jr., Kristy, and your families,
There isn't a single childhood memory I have where James Sr. didn't make me laugh and enjoy the event our families were attending. It was too soon to lose him. You are always in my thoughts and prayers.

To all the family of James Hammons,
We never had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr. Hammons; however, we feel as if we knew him through Mark and Leigh Ann Henderson. They loved him dearly and spoke often of Mr. Hammons and what a good man he was and his sense of humor. Our hearts are broken over your loss and our prayer is that God will continue to bless you and your family, may He continue to hold you in the palm of His hand.
