I was General Hollingsworth's crew chief at Red Carpet in 1972. The man was probably the best general officer to serve in Vietnam and I felt privileged to have know and served under MG James F. Hollingsworth. You just felt that nothing was going to happen to you.

It was a joy taking care of him in his residence prior to his passing. He was a true American Hero!

RIP Sir. My honor and privilege to serve as his pilot from May 1972 until he went home. He never backed away from anything.

It was a priviledge and pleasure to serve LT. Gen. Hollingsworth as one of his personal pilots in Korea (74-75). He was a true leader amongst men, never afraid to take the hard position when he thought it right regardless of the political wind. He demanded excellence, led by example and brought out the best of those he commanded. A true warrior.

There are never any right words to express how deeply sad I am for the pain your family is enduring at this difficult time. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service in defense of our rights and freedom. He was a legendary figure in the Big Red One. Battalion, Brigade, and Divisional positions. Best noted for problem solving in the LOH on the fly so to speak. Liked to be in the action, not just directing it. A very brave and dedicated soldier and person.

LTG Hollingsworth was my boss during the 1972 NVA Easter Offensive in Vietnam. He has always been one of my personal heroes and the world will not soon see his likes again. May the old warrior rest in peace and may God comfort his family.

We spoke often back in 1966 when we were in the 1st Infantry Division. Yes sir, I remember those days well. You will be missed. But, I'll see you soon.

Truely a soldiers General, All who served for him admired him greatly.

I remember sitting right down the pew from the Hollingsworths for several years at church. He is one of the main inspirations for me to attend Texas A&M University. Even though I was not in the Corps of Cadets, I was inspired to be the best Aggie I could be because of knowing General Hollingsworth! I'm proud to have known him and will treasure the talks I had with him when I was young.

Dear Janie, I will always remember our stay at BAMC. We had lots of meals together and lots of talk about everything. Most of all about how much we cared for and loved our husbands. I miss you and will visit you soon. God Bless and Give you strength. Prayers Judy

I knew the Gen during his days in Pakistan as a young Colonel in the USMAG. What a man what a soldier. He was a true friend of Pakistan. We have fond memories of our visits with Janie and James in San Antonio with our son Aamir and Grand son Kaamil, who was always fascinated by Gen Hollingsworth's war stories May his soul rest in Peace. General Hollingsworth was a great soldier and mentor to me. I am proud to have known him. His accomplishments in the US Army are legendary. He leaves behind him an inspiration to all Texas A&M cadets present, past and future.

I served as 79er's aide in Vietnam '66--'67 with the Big Red One & as his Executive Officer at Aberdeen Proving Grounds '67--'68. He was my hero; he treated me like a son. He inspired loyalty, admiration, dedication and service. The country has lost an illustrious servant and fierce fighter. May he rest in peace.

LTG Hollingsworth was one of the finest Officers I have ever met. I only wish that I would have been able to make it to San Antonio to interview him for our archives as he had asked me to do in Reno NV a few years back. His wonderful, colorful experiences never failed to excite you. On To Fiddlers Green. You will be missed.

I served in the Arctic Ranger Company under General Hollingsworth 1970 thru 1971. Without him our company would never have existed. He was a great insperation in my life then and still today He will be missed by all.My condolences to his wife and family

Proudly served for the General 1970 to 1972 Co. 0 75th infantry Arctic Rangers. His vision for this company was an inspiration and to this day 40 years later still influences and touches all our lives. In October 1958, COL Jim Hollingsworth was Deputy Commander of Combat Command "A", First Armored Division,a separate brigade level unit at Ft Hood, Texas. I arrived there at that time under less than pleasant circumstances. I had just been relieved of my job as recruiting officer at the Abilene, Texas Recruiting Main Station. The Captain commanding the Station was, in collusion with the local Chevrolet dealer, overcharging for maintenance on my vehicles and pocketing the overcharge. I reported this to the regional commander who relieved me for disloyalty, and sent me to FT Hood where I found myself standing at attention in front of COL Hollingsworth. He said something like "What is this shit, Willis?" I explained and he said "That took guts. I am putting you in G3. Go to work." Soon after, he called me again to his office and with some of his typical expletives, assigned me to command Company "A", First Armored Rifle Battallion. I excelled at the job and after two "best company in the annual command field training test" awards, he had me reassigned to G3, Second Armored Division where by that time he was Chief of Staff of the division. These two G3 assignments shaped the rest of my Army career. My wife Ingrid and I were able to visit Holly and Janie at their home in San Antonio in 2004, where I had the great satisfication of being able to thank him for being a great leader and for being my mentor. I miss him.

Col. Hollingsworth was a tactical officer who had significant influence with the Corps of Cadets. He inspired many cadets in their attitude toward service and selection of personal goals. I respected his leadership and regret his passing.

Great General, was proud to have served with him in 1966. Shared seats with him and his wife returning from a BRO reunion that was held in Las Vegas. He will not be forgotten.

I have great memories of General Hollingsworth---both from US Military Academy where he was assigned while I was a cadet and later in CCA, 1st Armored Division, Ft. Hood, TX, where we both served. He was inspirational.

April 1972, Danger 79er, was the commanding general trying to rescue my Advisory Team 70 that was under siege by 30,000 NVA & VC at Loc Ninh, S. Vietnam. I've always remembered him & that time. Even though our camp was over run and 3 of 5 team members were captured and held in a POW camp in Cambodia I deeply appreciated his efforts. About 10 years ago I had the opportunity to have lunch with he and his wife in San Antonio. One of America's most decorated soldiers and patriot's, he will be missed. They don't make soldiers like him any more. God Bless!

Gen. Hollingsworth was a guiding influence in my early life, and I have never forgotten him. An outstanding leader and soldier!

General Hollingsworth was a true American hero and a great Aggie. It was an honor to know him.

I served on the staff with Gen H in the Big Red One, 1965-1966. I enjoyed his stories, the many stories that found their way around the division about his way of doing business and the one he made me read in the Readers Digest about pulling a tank through a town in WWII. Even the couple of times he swore at me I thought it was great and they are the basis for some of my favorite stories. God bless Gen.Hollingsworth

We will always have fond memories of our association and trips with Jim and Janie.We will miss the wonderful stories and jokes that Jim told. We will miss him.

I had the pleasure of serving under then-Major General Hollingsworth at Ft. Jackson SC in the late 1960's. A soldier's soldier, the general always put the troops first. Having served our country with distinction and honor, may be now rest in peace.

General Hollingsworth handed me my commission in the U.S. Army in May 1973 and whispered, "You got a big name there, son." I said, "Sir, I've got a big name to live up to." After the ceremony, General Hollingsworth crossed the hall looking for me. He wanted to meet my family. We spent 15-to-20 minutes comparing family histories and taking pictures. What a gracious gentleman. Later, he sent me an autographed photo. Im looking at it as I type this. It's framed and displayed on my wall. Thank God for leaders, soldiers and men like General Hollingsworth.
