

James Garnet Hopkins passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. He was born in Seguin, Texas on October 5, 1908. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where he attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School, Brackenridge Elementary, Cuney Middle School and graduated from Douglass High School. He was a musician who played with several renown bands as Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teegarden, Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong before organizing his own James Hopkins Orchestra. He retired from the San Antonio Independent School District after 39 years of service. He had a magnificent bass voice and he sang with the Royal Knights Chorale, St. Paul's and St. Phillip's Episcopal Church choirs, and the St. Phillip's College Community Choir. His principal music instrument was piano but he learned to play the organ and served as the organist and choir director at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church choir for many years. His parents, and wife of 50 years, Johnnie, preceded him in death. He is survived by his godson, Valree Thompson and wife Joyce; and numerous relatives and friends. Litany and viewing will be on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
