James Michael Irelan, 77, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on July 29, 1947, in Clinton, Indiana, Michael was the beloved son of the late Betty (Ball) and James Roscoe Irelan.
Michael grew up in Indiana and graduated from Turkey Run High School in Marshall. He went on to attend Indiana State University in Terre Haute from 1965 to 1969 and later earned his master's degree from Chapman College in California.
A proud veteran, Michael served his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He continued his military career as a respected instructor and Flight Commander, shaping future generations of pilots with his steady guidance and deep commitment to service.
Following his military service, Michael took to the skies once more as a commercial pilot with BRANIFF Airlines. Never one to be limited by a single path, he transitioned into the field of technology and became a skilled software developer. His career included work with La Quinta Inns, AMPI, and KCI. He also founded and led his own consulting business, Global "M" Enterprises Inc., applying his leadership and technical acumen to help others navigate complex systems.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Michèle Henkle-Irelan. They shared nearly 30 years of marriage, building a life full of joy, adventure, and unwavering support for one another. Their 30th anniversary would have been celebrated this coming November.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Michèle; his daughters, Theresa D. Valdez (Jaime) and Harley Olivia Quinn; and his cherished grandchildren, Jonathon Valdez, Hailey Valdez, Cory Irelan, and Justin Irelan. Michael was also blessed with a great-grandson, Luca Valdez. He is also survived by sisters Nancy (Steve) Read, Lisa (Mike) Serrano and brothers John (Brenda) Irelan, Ron (Malinda) Irelan and their families.
Michael will be remembered as a man of great intellect, quiet strength, and boundless generosity. His legacy of service, innovation, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
A private family service will be held in Indiana to honor his life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an organization of your choice, in Michael’s memory.
