

James (Jim) H. Joyner (86) of San Antonio, Texas passed away on the morning of Dec. 29, 2016. He was born to the late Percy T. and Edna (Wilkinson) Joyner on May 30, 1930 of Palatka, Florida, and graduated in 1948 from Palatka High School. He joined the Navy after graduation, like several of his other classmates. He served from 1948 till 1952 working as an Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. His principal duty stations were Whidbey, Washington, and the Battleship Iowa. He also had a tour of duty in Korea, working as a Sound Power Telephone repairman. He returned home to Palatka and worked a short time at Hudson Pulp & Paper.
In 1953, Jim moved to Corpus Christi, Texas and went to work for the Corpus Christi Fire Department, achieving the position of Fire Capt. He also met Grace and they were married in November, 1955. This November they celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary!
While working as a fireman, Jim attended Del Mar Junior College and obtained an Associate in Arts Degree (1963). He was then able to complete a Bachelor of Business Degree from Texas A&I (later becoming Texas A&M University at Kingsville, Texas). In 1968, he obtained a position with Travelers Insurance Company in their Loss Control Department where he was an Account Manager. His job required a good bit of traveling throughout the Midwest. On one occasion, he traveled to China with several Travelers Associates to help a Chinese insurance company to add a Safety Consulting Department. After retiring in 1993, Jim started his own Safety Consulting Company, Joyco Safety, Inc. He finally retired in 2010 after an active working career.
Jim and Grace did a lot of traveling. He also enjoyed sitting in his backyard enjoying the outdoors and watching the birds.
Jim is survived by his wife, Grace; a son, James E. (Jay) Joyner of New Braunfels; a daughter, Debra Diane Smith of Kerrville; a grandson, Stephen Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Zoe Smith, both of whom live in Germany. The family will receive friends at a memorial visitation from 7:00-8:00 on Thursday, January 12, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
