James Colin Kelley, aged 86, peacefully entered his eternal rest on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. Born on January 27, 1938, to Ruthie Mae and John Landis Kelley in Goose Creek, Texas, James lived a life rich in love, adventure, and craftsmanship.
James was a man whose heart was most full when surrounded by his family, the people he cherished above all. Among the many moments they shared, a particularly treasured memory was a Hawaiian cruise, where they celebrated his 70th birthday alongside his son’s 40th. The ocean, with its vastness and mystery, was James’s muse. Whether he was aboard a ship or simply gazing at the sea from a beloved vantage point, he found peace in its endless horizons. In quieter times, James delighted in sitting hand in hand with his beloved wife, watching birds and squirrels dance through their backyard, a testament to the simple joys he so appreciated.
A man of many talents, James was an artisan at heart. His skill as a woodworker and model boat maker was unmatched, as his hands brought to life intricate vessels that echoed the beauty and craftsmanship of the real ones. His love for the sea was mirrored in these creations, each one a testament to his meticulous attention to detail and deep respect for the craft. James also had a passion for poker, where his sharp mind and competitive spirit shone through, enjoying the camaraderie and the challenge the game brought.
Professionally, James had a distinguished career as an air traffic controller, guiding countless souls safely through the skies. After retirement, his natural gift with people led him to a successful second career in sales, where he could sell anything from cars to boats, sharing his passion and knowledge with everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 60 years, Seawillow Gay Kelley; his son, James C. Kelley Jr., and his wife, Teresa; his daughter, Seawillow Schmidt, and her husband, Dale; his grandchildren, Chase William Kelley, Hailey Seawillow Kelley, Asa Colin Kelley, Taylor James Kelley, Cole Kelley Schmidt, and Lyle Ray Schmidt. He also leaves behind cherished nieces and countless friends who became family.
James C. Kelley will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy is a tapestry woven with the threads of love, laughter, and a life lived with grace and purpose. In the quiet moments, we will hear the echo of his laughter, feel the warmth of his wisdom, and see his gentle hand in the beauty of the world around us. The memories he leaves behind are not just recollections, but living pieces of his soul, carried forward by those who loved him. As we navigate the days ahead, we will find comfort in knowing that his presence lingers in the soft whisper of the wind, in the gentle sway of the trees, and in the hearts of those who were touched by his kindness. Though he has moved on to eternal rest, the love he shared and the joy he brought into this world will forever ripple through the lives he touched, a beacon of light that will never fade.
