

James Handley Mathis (Jim) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born in Denmark, Mississippi on January 23, 1936. In 1953, at the age of 17, he joined the Air Force in San Antonio where he met Gloria, his wife of 47 years. He served 20 years in the service with a stint in Vietnam. He was there during the Tet Offensive in ’68. After retiring from the military, he became a farrier (horse shoer) and shoed for many years. He was also breeding and training horses at that time.
In 1970, the family built an arena for horse training. For a few years, he hosted Sunday afternoon horse races and potluck suppers. By 1973, the arena evolved into a rough stock arena, Kickers Korner Rodeo Arena, bucking horses, and bulls. Eventually, he would have Saturday night bull riding jackpots and dances on the patio. This is where he met many lifelong friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, sons Mark and Chris, brother, Bobby Mathis and sisters, Dorothy Hatley and Kay McCoy.
He is survived by his wife, Carmelita Mathis, children and their spouses, Suzanne Gates (James), Andy Mathis (Diane), Will Mathis (Gena), Misty Mathis (Justin Poag), grandchildren; Ashley, Nathan, Eric, Kyle, Kelly, Angel, Kate, Levi, great grandchildren; Allison, Taylor, Trip, Hunter, Tucker, Emmit, Isaiah, Quay, Brother; Tim McCoy.
