His childhood was spent in Enid and Lawton, Oklahoma and San Antonio, Texas. He played football at Jefferson High School, and attended Trinity University on a football scholarship. Jim attended Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas and was elected a member of the honorary medical fraternity AOA.
Jim met his wife, Margaret Burke Bond, in 1952 on a blind date while Margaret was attending Southern Methodist University. Jim and Margaret married a year later, on August 22, 1953 and then moved to San Antonio for Jim's internship at Robert B. Green Hospital.
Jim joined his older brother Harry A. Richmond, Jr. in the practice of medicine and shortly thereafter, Jim and Margaret welcomed their daughters, Laura Ann and Martha Louise in 1958, and 1961. In 1962, they moved into their home on Tamworth where they have lived ever since.
George M. Richmond joined his two older brothers in the practice of medicine and the three brothers acted as The Doctors for the jail and Juvenile Manufacturing, took care of San Antonio's finest - our police officers, volunteered their time at Planned Parenthood, and acted as the sideline doctors for many high school football games.
The brothers practiced medicine together for over 20 years, doing it all, making house calls, performing surgery, and Jim's favorite - delivering babies. The partnership ended in 1983 with the retirement of Harry and the death of George.
Jim welcomed George M. Richmond, Jr. into the practice and then retired in 1991. Jim didn't miss the late night phone calls, but he did miss the patients - he took particular pride in treating 5 generations of one family.
Outside of medicine, Jim's interests centered on family activities. He especially loved dancing with Margaret, kite flying with his girls, camping and canoeing, fishing down at Port A, gardening, snow skiing, Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys games, traveling, and in later years, playing with his grandsons.
After Margaret became ill in 1977, Jim devoted his life to caring for her and shared another wonderful 30 + years by her side. During that time he took up running and fell in love with it. He ran both 10k races and marathons including the Boston Marathon while Margaret cheered him on from the sidelines. He became a mentor to and inspiration for many runners.
When heart problems slowed him down, he became an avid walker at McAllister and Walker Parks with his loyal dog, Pearl.
Jim died of heart problems on Sunday, December 13, 2009 with his wife, Margaret, by his side.
Jim and Margaret were very appreciative of the excellent medical care they received over the years from their wonderful doctors. He often said it was a miracle that they were both still alive.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harry A. Richmond, Sr. and Louie Mazie Richmond.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret B. Richmond; his daughter Laura Cole, her husband Larry, and grandsons Jim Ed and John T. Cole; his daughter Martha Richmond and husband Dale Richardson, many nieces, nephews, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law.
